Sexy, reliable car under $20k?

Don't like my car anymore, was planning to buy the Tesla model 3 when it came out, but it looks like I'd have to wait over a year to get one and that's really the only car I'd want to spend over $20k on. I'm looking to buy a newer vehicle, probably 2010-2016. I gotta have something that's not gonna cost more to maintain than it's worth. I know plenty of sexy cars that are in the shop 24/7. That's not what I want. I want something sporty and slick, but that I'm not dishing out as much as the car is worth in repairs.

There's the Camaros, Mustangs, Challengers, but I get the feeling these are the cars I mentioned, flashy, but unreliable.

Anyway, need some help finding options, scrolling through ads and I'm not really seeing anything that sticks out to me.

 

Get a bmw with a 3l diesel engine, they're very reliable (bmw model doesn't matter much cause they use the same engine so just your preference)

 

Haha was looking at a 2013 BMW 328I for $15k. Love BMWs. The guy isn't answering his phone though, probably sold already.

 

Bmw all the way for me reliable and low fuel usage. Will go for a 3L diesel 6syl.

 

I agree with this. Those are not reliable cars at all.

I currently drive a 2016 Mazda 6, and I think it's a great ass car for the price. I actually went to the shop today to get an oil change and when the technician was bringing my car back around a guy that was waiting with me was like "Damn, that's a hot car don't you think?" to his wife. Weird story but relevant and really recent.

If that doesn't suit you are there any specific types of cars you like more than others? Sedans, SUVs, coupes, convertibles, etc.?

 

Mazda 3/6 is always a solid choice. New Honda Civic is supposed to be really solid

 

Yeah BMWs are sexy cars. I've heard some negative things about their reliability though. Maybe it's just with certain models.

There's actually a 2016 Mazda 3 for sale nearby. I'm gonna see if it's still available tomorrow. I do like those cars. The problem is the booking prices say to but it around $13k and he's asking $15k. So I gotta play the ole' haggle game. I think I'd be willing to go $13,500 on it, hopefully we can at least settle there.

Oh man, every Civic I know of goes till you don't want it to go no more. I'm not a fan of the look though. If they were sexier, I'd buy one.

 

Yeah some 4 syl has problems but the diesel 6 and gass engines in newer models are great!

 

I am a supervisor at a plant that manufactures all the aluminum frame supports and basically anything aluminum on all Teslas.... I would honestly strongly suggest against a tesla.

 

2013+ Genesis Coupe, grey or white. Older models don't have the vents on the hood.

Quite literally came to this thread to suggest you to get a model 3 I personally think it would be worth waiting and using a car you're alright with for the next year-or-so and then purchasing a model 3. Autopilot is standard and a minimum of 215 miles to a charge sounds like a pretty good deal for 27.5. If Musk meets his goal of 500k cars next year, you'll be able to get one sometime next year as there are currently at least 373k reservations and they are aiming for 5k cars a week by the end of this year.

Tesla's are among the safest production cars ever produced. Their engineering is top notch and their safety ratings are superb.

 

You can get around a 2013-14 with decent miles for a Mercedes C Class. I have one my self and Mercedes is a very well known classy cars, and women love them! Also the customer service you get when you bring your car in is world class

 

Look for a 2012 mercedes benz slk200 they are really sexy/reliable and cost 20k~

 

^Great car aswell! Only downside for a car like that and year would be millage would be a little higher then what you're probably interested in.

 

I've actually heard bad things about the handling on the new Civs, but I haven't test driven one yet so I couldn't say for myself.

 

I have a G37S coupe, its a good and reliable car but takes a lot of gas, I've had a lot of fun driving it though.

I'd like to pick up a 370z Nismo sometime in the future though.

 

Would love to have a model 3. But the minimum price is $35k and I can't even buy it till next year like we both mentioned. My car has some major cosmetic issues, everyone but myself somehow has managed to damage it. So it's not something I'll be proud or love to drive for another year+. Was thinking maybe I'd buy a <$20k car and then in a year or two sell it for a small loss and buy the Model 3.

I've also considered buying the Model S. I think they pop up on the market for a decent price once in a while. Similar to the Model 3s price. If I see something like that I'll hop on it.

 

Yeah the Benz are pretty sexy. To get a newer year with decent mileage might exceed my price limit though...

Minimum price before federal incentive of $7,500 + state incentives. Depending on your state, your Model 3 could start at 22k.

I gotchu, but soon as you get into pricier cars, you get into bigger losses. If you're not familiar with cars, I would bring someone with you that can really look at used car as new car values drop tremendously. There's also the option of leasing a car. There are plenty of deals that come around at $100-$200 a month for a pretty nice car which could hold you over until you get a car you really want.

I am just wary of spending a lot of money on a car that is like a second-best. Also, be sure to take in maintenance when you're looking at both newer cars and luxury cars. Mercedes are expensive as hell to maintain because something as simple as brake-pads can cost you $800. Basically, make sure it's a small loss and not a way larger loss than you're expecting.

I have seen a few of them on the market for as low as around 50K, but you can definitely get one cheaper than that. You'll just be getting an older model with different capabilities and range.

 

Oh man Now I want it that much more. Wish so badly they'd get it out sooner. Maybe someone will sell theirs towards the end of the year for a similar price.

Yeah, I imagine I'd lose up to $5k on a car in the meantime. I'm trying to get a sweet deal so i can make my losses minimal on resale.

I really wanted to lease a car, but everywhere I look they want crazy non-refundable deposits and/or monthly and give you very little miles.
