Setup your email account on a Mac.

Mac OS X comes default with a fantastic mail application; "Mail.app"
It does have a lot of features (spam filter, flagging, making folders, etc.)
and is easy to work with. This guide will explain how to add an e-mail account
to the mail application. I will use not existing servers to demonstrate it to you.



Step one
Open the mail application and select "Preferences" in the menu on the top.
You will see this screen; (on the left side you will see all configured mailboxes)


Step two
Fill in your full name, e-mail address and password.
'Mail' will now check on the internet if there are any settings already available.
If there are configuration files available, 'mail' will configure everything for you.


Step three
There are no configuration settings available, so you need to fill in some
details by yourself. We're starting with the server for coming mail.
This almost always is POP or IMAP, depending on your host.


Step four
Is it a SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) connection. If yes, choose the option
'use SSL'. If selected, 'mail' automatically will change the server port.


Step five
Configure the server for outgoing e-mail. This probably will be SMTP.
If you need to login to the server to send mail, select 'Use identity'.
Fill in your username and password. 'Mail' will automatically check your settings.


Step six
Check the settings one more time, just to be sure. If you're sure, click
on 'Create' and 'mail' will configure the other settings automatically.
'Mail' will automatically check for new e-mail every 5 minutes.


Congratulations. You do now have configured your own e-mail address.

Always send yourself a test e-mail to be sure if everything is working.
It is possible to add as many e-mail addresses as you want.
I'm currently using 8 or 9 e-mail addresses bij myself now without any problems.

 

This is a nice guide, I use this myself to be honest on my mac, it makes managing my emails very simple, and one of the little perks that I like about the mac OS.

A tip that you could change / add into your next guide.
-Try switching your language to English for screenshots. This forum is mainly English, or can read English so it would be helpful that the pictures are also in English.

I am an avid Apple fanboi, and I absolutely love their Mail app. Considering I have a personal and school email, it used to be a pain to keep track of the two of them. Mail has made it much easier.

While your guide is very basic, it is able to help the user who is completely new to Apple products (they're deprived). It would also improve the guide if you retook the screenshots in the English language.

Glad to see another Apple user.
