There seem to be certain advertising schemes that get through to people and some that get people pissed off. I've been doing a bit of my own research to try to find out what things people like and what things people can't stand to aid me in a real life business I'm starting soon.

This is not a thread for you to advertise your website so please read the rules, etc.

I'm interested in seeing what works and what doesn't.

I for one can't stand two main things.

I hate when a telemarketer calls me and asks me to do a survey that's not paying nor benefiting any non profit that I would care about.

I also hate being blocked from doing something for the purpose of seeing an ad. A literal 3 second ad before a youtube vid with a catchy tune that doesn't put you in a bad mood is one thing. Putting myspace ads on every single band/musician's page is a truly stupid marketing scheme.

When I'm trying to do something like listening to music, I don't want to see an ad and I'll do anything to get rid of it as fast as possible. I don't even glance at it.

Youtube's ads seem the most tasteful out of mainstream webrowsing right now (aside from the ones that pop up DURING your video).

On the main page everything is clean and if you actually cared about a product on the page, you'd consider clicking it (even if you're not an ad clicker such as myself).

Advertising schemes that DO get through to me are as follows:

-Someone walking up face to face and handing me a business card/flyer that has to do with an event I'm attending. If I'm at a concert I'm more than happy to get a flyer that tells me about the next show. However, I don't want a nail salon or pizza place coupon there.

People just don't get it when they try to advertise things.

    Please share your input.

    Thanks,
    Ethan

There aren't many commercials/advertisements that really appeal to me, but I like the one's that aren't conventional. Ones that are witty and funny, and occasionally make fun of pop-culture.
    For example:
There was a commercial for Burger King that was parodying celebrity spokes models.

Hmmm... I don't really pay attention to adverts. But, if I see a good one, then I might tell someone how awesome it is... I never remember what it's advertising though.

The products don't appeal to me at all, but some of the adverts do. If you get that.

Btw, I'm talking about tv ads. xD

    Most favourite:

The best way of advertising which catches my attention are the funny ones. Any advert with abit of humour really catch my attention and sometimes I even go to the place they are advertising.

    Least favourite:

TV Adverts with really stupid people on it, for example the Gold4Cash advert or the Envriophone advert.

Another advertising scheme that bugs me are the adverts that are on the bottom of your MSN and they pop up when your mouse goes over them.

Animated adverts at the top of websites which bug you. Constantly flashing and generally annoying.

Well, I HATE the ads that go full screen when you accidentally roll over it with your mouse, or they do it on page load up. Like the wolverine one in RuneScape HighScores when that was out. Stuff like that just annoys me.

But I also hate the Youtube ads before your video starts. Like the 30 second cat food ones when your trying to watch a montage or something hardcore :p. Thats why TV is losing people to the Internet, no commercials but now they have them. BAD.

    I hate...

Mormon advertising (haha, but real talk -_-)

on a more serious note, I hate it when I click into a website (that has an ad on the front page redirecting to the main site).. Then when you back click out, it takes you back to the ad page which then redirects you to the main site again. No progress whatsoever. >_<
