Digits represent the age and number of the steam account. For example, a three-digit account with the numbers 459 would represent the 459th account made(somewhere over ten years ago). That means this account would probably be worth a LOT of money in real life or in other game currency. Higher-digit accounts are therefore worth less. The current digit of an account would be eight digits if you made one right now.

I don't see why people want low digits. I have a 7 and 8 digit with different games and I love them to bits . I'm assuming people who want to buy a 3 digit want to look like really awesome players who have been playing for a decade. Why would you want this? I don't know or care...

I think they should be sold on what games are in them. Why are 8 digits with loads of games sold for less than $10? That's good for people like me who don't care about the digits.

The same reason someone would want the account name 'nub', or in this case, the account 'Steam'. It has value, and nobody can really explain why we want those accounts. It's the same reason Zezima, the most popular Runescape player, has had thousands of attempts on a hijacking of his account. People admire those qualities, and thus are willing to pay more for them.
