Some question about making a Range Tank..

Right lads, I'm in need of some advice on making a low to mid level Range Tank.

I tried searching for some guides on Google, but either they all suck, or are incomplete, which I find kind of surprising since it's a quite popular PK breed.

Anyhow, are 40 Def Rangers still viable in the Wild? Because I was thinking of making something like this..

1 Atk
1 Def
40 Def
70 - 99 Range
44 Pray
Whatever HP

And use Rune Knifes to RCBow for the KO. I'd LOVE to have stats like 75 Def, 94 Mage, 76 Pray, etc.., but I just don't have the time for it.. unless I'd buy an account with those stats.

Anyway, would this do? Also, I'm a little lost on how to train def without any melee skills. I've been told using Longrange, but isn't there a faster way?

And what about quests? Everyone recommends me doing DT, but I don't see the point since I'm never gonna brid anyway. Lunar Diplomacy is kind of a must I guess, though getting the required skills will be a real cunt.. not to mention 94 Mage For Veng.. or could I survive without it?

Lotsa' questions, I know, but I've been struggling with these for days.

In F2p range tanks are by far the most viable and best breed of hybrid/tank/pure i guess you could so so yeah i doubt if you were doing f2p that you would even need the pray, but get 99 range only takes like a week at max if you do red chins!

Oh well in that case im fairly sure that at 99range 99hp 70 def 94 mage 1 attack pray and strength your only 90 combat which is fairly low and you stats are very nice so if you have time to create and account, that is what i would aim for!

 

Well, that'd require lots of time, which is something I don't really have. I have a 9 to 6 job, so during a workweek I only get to play about 3-4 hours. It would take MONTHS for me to acquire those stats. Hence why I'm looking to make something simple, yet fun to pk with.

I got you don't worry.

For starters, no if you are p2p 40 defense doesn't seem legit, you are basicly a zerker without the atk and str. I'd get at least 70 def.

Most people will say you won't get K0's w/o veng/briding. This is untrue you just need to get good at switches learn to use the hand cannon (personally never touched it as a maxed tank) and the dark bow.

I'd quest the prayer and defense for starters. I just finished getting 43 through quest and if you want I can link you to my thread. Questing the defense if you plan on staying 40, this way you could get barrow gloves, otherwise if you plan on getting it higher it just helps getting the level up to 40+. Also do the quest for prayer so you can get the Ava's Alerter (the best of the three)

I'd recommend 55 slayer for broad bolts, well worth the cash you save if you are going to get 99 with cbow.

I'd really recommend getting ancients and learning to range/mage as a tank. It's really effective, I can even link you to and in depth guide of hybriding. You'd get more kills, it takes work but I find it more fun, and if you get good at it, you're hard to stop.


edit- I ruined my first max range tank by getting 70 prayer (i personally didn't like it). So I am rebuilding and would be happy to help you in game with the harder quest, even pk with you. I'm not to far up, I've been questing and skilling on 40 def, 66/75 range, 43 prayer and 130qp though. 65Cb

 

Imo, pures are more fun if you build them for the wild, train in f2p, PK in f2p and when you've had enough, move onto P2p.

Then I'd get barrows gloves, and you can google a list for that.

I did swan song because I want to be able to skill and act almost like a main when I'm not pking.

Barrows gloves, dt, and lunar are the must do IMO for max range tank potential, otherwise its up to you after that. I maxed my other account out without questing for cannon, hand cannon, crystal bow, and was just fine in the wildy and training, but this new account is getting them just because.

Also I just made an rs forums clan for range tanks if you are interested, it's mainly to help each other build up our own accounts, advice, pvp, pvm, mini games and such and it's nice to have people to talk to when training.
