Should ex-felons be able to vote?

This includes not just prison inmates (48 states), parolees (33 states) and probationers (29 states) but also a large number of people. Minorities are strucken hard by these state laws. This denies 13 percent of African American men the right to vote.

The 14th Amendment permits states to deny the right to vote "for participation in rebellion, or other crimes." The purpose of prison is to deny freedom, such as voting. But with ex-cons, the case is different.

Please don't say it should depend on what they did, because after they paid there dues to society it shouldn't matter.

I say yes. Even if they committed a crime, we shouldn't take away their right to vote.

Well, since they are ex-felons, I think they should have a right to vote. Besides the fact they have a record, they aren't different from the rest of society once released.

I don't see prison as a debt to society...

It's just a way to keep THEM away from US.

but once they're with US again they can vote all they want.

(Of course, people serving extended sentences shouldn't get any rights at all when they're in prison...)

The right to vote is restricted to those under the mental health laws, or those serving sentences in prison.

However, once a criminal is released, she or he has served their sentence, and is no longer a prisoner, and therefore deserves the right to vote, yes.

Why do you think that the American government doesn't allow people who have served their senteces to vote?

They don't, And also ex-convicts lose a lot of rights well, they can't get the same jobs anymore, work with people sometimes, and still can't vote...

But we take away their freedom? We put them in cages whats a lose of votes to them...
