    Schools limiting children?

Does anyone else have a problem like this?

In my twelfth grade class we've been reading a book about the mid 1960's, having to due with hippies and the US Government. For the last two weeks of school we've decided to make announce it "Hippie Weeks".

Tie dye shirts, beads, peace symbols, flip flops/sandals. And so on,

But we've been told we cannot wear any of this for the last two weeks, we have no formal outfits at our school, and we could wear these on any other day. This isn't the first time we've tried this, we did last year in our Literature class too, so why are they denying anything that has to do with Hippies and the Vietnam War? Does anyone else have this problem at school? Their blaming it on "gang related colors" but were able to wear these at any other DAY. So anyone who participates receives ten days of OSS, how is this fair?
Also, they've already told us they don't allow any other school in the county to do this, yet my sisters elementary can do this?

    Wrong section.

They shouldn't do it, but they do. Nothing really you can do. Noone honestly takes students seriously. And if they do, they won't do anything for the fear of doing the right thing and losing their jobs.

The only thing I can recommend is to debate it with the person who made the rule against it. Hopefully they don't do what they want, when they want and actually do things because of reason.

It depends if there's a rule in the code of conduct. And even then, the rule could be unconstitutional.

If you've got balls/money, wear it, and then take it to court when they suspend you.

You should be able to wear what ever you want (within reason) when there's no uniform. If the whole year did it, would they suspend everybody? I doubt it.

I'm sure you could take them to court if they try to give you trouble for it... Have fun, tree hugger! :p

Well if it's a public school there should be no reason you could not where that. I guess they're afraid there's going to be a lot of pot smokers, idk just guessing.

Every school is like this, and they all get away with it. For some reason the government looks past the rights of students, especially in public school systems. It's just the way it is.. and it's why public schools are so fucked up. They're so concerned about the minorities (not race, just a minority of the students) opinions that they restrict the choices of the majority to accommodate the choices of the whiny kids and parents who complain about every little thing.

I'd wear them, get the 10 days suspension, and BITCH about it to the superintendent/district principle.

I think after that the silly principle would get a nice talkign to, suspension would be reversed, and it probably wouldn't happen again.

Were unable to have "gang" related shirts.
It seperates people, and can cause in-school vilence, witch makes them look, bad.

    Meh
I wore shit, they just yelled at the teacher and gave me Saturday school.
I think having a weed bust going on at our school really plays into effect with wearing colorful items.

Schools vary. I'd say some schools allow children to dress however they like (within reason), and others put limitations on things. I'd also say things haven't changed much from the 60's at all.. infact these days things aren't as harsh.
