Just another kid who got addicted to his computer games..

Just another kid who got addicted to his computer games..

I'm 15, I've been playing computer games (Mainly RS) since I was 8 or 9. I isolated myself from the real world, and any social behaviours for 7-12 hours a day (Un healthy, I realise). At the time I really didn't think It'd affect me much. I was still very social (I'd talk your ears off..). Now, I'm seeing the long term affects of this.
I don't talk, unless I'm asked to (class room/friends), I have no empathy for others, no social skills, cannot show any sign of 'happyness' (always frowning etc).
My New years resolution for this year was to cut back on my computer time to at least 3-5 hours a day, or lower. I've succeeded. I started going to the gym, reading books, watching movies, joining a karate class, going for walks, and making time for my friends more.

Yes, this is all brilliant, but still.. I am not a social person anymore. My friends are starting to hate it. I need to change, I don't know what I can do to re-gain my social skills, and other traits/qualities that I've lost.

Look, I don't need anyone telling me how fucked up and how horrible it was spending 7-12 hours of my life on the computer, I realize, and now I'm suffering the consequences.
I need help, more then anything..

No, no. You've got it wrong. I've fixed my computer hours, but not my social side.
I'm basically looking for ideas/ways to help me re-gain what I lost.

Try not playing computer games at all for about a month and see how it affects your social skills to know if it's permanent or not. If you ask me it's not permanent, you just have to speak your mind, show as much emotion in things as possible and try to cut back on the computer games. cheers.

Social functioning(if this is the case) when unused can deteriorate.

In cases of large amounts of drug abuse and cognitive damage, you can see there are definite social deficiencies. However, the part of your brain that relates to socializing is like a muscle. You can use it or lose it.

HOWEVER, like a muscle, after long years of being weak and unused, it can still be brought back. There are many cases of this in drug abuse, and this may be the cause.

To be honest, you're most likely depressed. Get out more, get active, hang out with people, and socialize. This helped me a lot when I was depressed.

Another thing is, you're probably around 15-16 right? Well if you're anything like me, those are going to be hell years. However it is a common case to be depressed around those years going through changes- you may not realize this and think it's bullshit(I did) but really, it's true. Go through life looking for what makes you happy, and not entertained. This will help a LOT.

^ what about that? if you keep doing that, and spend minimal time on the computer u'll be set. but if you still are worried about social skills take a public speaking class or just try and start a conversation with everyone.

To remove something that takes up so much in your life, you must replace it with other things. I cannot do that, well until I get a job.

I cannot speak my mind. The opinion just isn't there anymore. Yes, I can freely do it on the internet, but in real life.. It's a different story. ( I wonder why that is?)

Public speaking classes? What are these?

Makes sense, It does. Thanks for that.

Carlton I come here trying to help you posting a well thought out and you even admitted helpful post.

Then I try and be nice and cheer you up and you report me?

I don't like you, I don't know why I try to help people-they not only don't return the favor but they attack you attempting to be Mr. Police officer of a forum.

I hope you start doing drugs soon-

Kid, want some ACID? Just go ahead, snort it up-and I don't care what you hear about acid not being white powder. SNORT THAT SHIT

Have you tried meeting people at the gym, or joining clubs? Maybe your karate class? But your best bet would be with joining a club.

I mean, I had the same issue about 2-3 years ago. I was highly addicted to the forums and RS and it affected my social life more than I noticed. I just got everything I wanted in RS and then I realized that it wasn't that great. So now, I play on rare occasion and I visit the forums semi-frequently. I'm not sure how to help you, but it's just one of those things you grow out of.

And I gave you the same psychological advice any medical expert would give you.

You just want to become some mod because you play too many computer games and have little to no friends.

    Reported again btw

(This is off-topic forums I can say whatever I want)

    No, not overally.

No one really talks in the gym. Like, I talk to some people for advice, etc.

I cannot make conversation, I cannot talk (I can, It's not that I don't want to, It's that I just cannot). My bodylanguage is horrible.

Lets hope I 'grow out of it' then, eh?

No, you cannot. This thread has a purpose. Threatening me in PM won't do it either.

Well first things first. You need to make friends who are sociable. Don't expect to make friends who play WoW or RS and expect to become more sociable. Try meeting friends from your brother, sister, or other friends, cousins, etc.
