So... I just learned how to whisk egg whites.

I can't believe for all this time I thought that "egg white" meant "egg shell."

So I would break the shell, put all the gooey stuff in a bowl, then try whisking the egg shells with some water in another bowl, and I didn't get why it wouldn't turn into foam. So I would clean the egg shells with water, dry them with hair dryers, dip them in vinegar, etc (because i heard the egg whites had to be free of protein to be whipped) and when I started whisking the shells didn't decompose and instead just sat there as little white things.

So when I ate my omelets in the morning I was actually crunching all those pieces of egg whites. And I'd look at all the recipes I could about how to whisk egg whites and I'd bang my head on the wall because it never worked.

Then this morning found out on Wikipedia that the "egg white" is actually the little transparent pale yellow goo inside the egg alongside the big yellow bulb.

I'm used to strict constructionism and all that, I thought that whisking egg whites meant whisking the part of the egg that is white... and the shell is the only white part! Damn WTF is this... argh... I hope all those bits of egg shells aren't accumulating in my belly after all this time now.

i have chickens and an essential part of their diet are oyster shells to maintain shell density. Unfortunately they can't digest the shell itself for some reason (who knows why) but without it they sometimes lay eggs with little to no shell.
