Now, I want to clear up one thing before you start reading this guide. ANY INITIAL INTERNET BROWSER LOADED ONTO A COMPUTER (I.E. or Safari) IS PERFECTLY FINE. Nobody should feel the NEED to use Mozilla or any other browser. Now some people complain about how ActiveX on I.E. or Safari allow random things to download onto your computer. But, this wont be a problem if you are smart and be safe while surfing.

Now, the following sections are made to help you maintain a safer internet life style and help you keep your personal information just that... personal.


*Initial Steps*

Ok, this section is for anyone who is just cracking open their new computer or browser for the first time.

Browsers such as Mozilla Firefox are privatized browsers, and are usually very good. But only trust the privatized browsers that you know are safe to use, usually these are the ones that are made by official companies.

WARNING ABOUT MOZILLA: When you install Firefox onto your computer, they are very annoying and can cause trouble. Such trouble is: Constant opening of Firefox when trying to open I.E. or Safari. A ringing noise that goes off every time you open the internet.

These issues have been noticed on more current laptops, so if you are a longtime user, you shouldn't fret.

Now, if you are using a PC, you will want to set your security settings. How to do this is as follows:

1. Find the Internet Explorer icon on your desktop.

2. Right click and go to Personalize (May be called customize, still unsure)

3. Once the menu pops up, click the Security tab near the top of the page.

4. Now here is where you can set the security level of your internet.
-Higher is not always better. (only allows approved cookies and manually accepted downloads)
-Medium is usually good but you need to think about what YOU need. (allows cookies and warns about safe downloads)
-Lowest setting is only for if you absolutely must (allows ALL cookies and downloads)

Next, you want to check that your "cookie" accepting setting is right. (MAC)

1. Open Safari

2. Click "Safari" button near the apple button in top left of screen

3. Go to and click "Preferences"

4. Go to Security tab

Now look near the bottom and it will give you three options for accepting cookies:

Always
Never
Only to sites i navigate to

Make sure it is checked on the last one, the safest and easiest way.


For a Windows computer just go to the same menu as for security and it should be there. If anyone can confirm or correct that would be great.


*Anti-Virus*

This will be a rather short section since it is pretty straight forward.

The virus protector that i would use for a PC is McAfee (by popular demand). It is a very nice, quick, and efficient scanner.

What you should do to avoid viruses is to scan suspicious or detected files. Do not download anything warned to you by your computer without scanning first. Trusted sites such as RuneScape are fine but any site from google that is not well known you should be cautious.

You should run a virus scan AT LEAST ONCE A MONTH to avoid any severe damage to your files


*Sites to Avoid*

The following types of sites are those that you should avoid:

-Pornography (unless you need it o.o)
-Any promotional site with a contest (Ads usually link to these)
-Phishing sites and some "Fan" sites
-Sometimes... not always... sites that were made for free
-Gaming sites that are not popular and could contain SpyWare or Viruses
-Sites made for hacking/cheating (Sythe is not included because it is "trading"
-Any site you feel suspicious about.


*Personal Information*

This is how to keep your personal information safe and to yourself.

After browsing, you should delete ALL history in case anyone can get onto your computer. This will delete the list of previous sites you have visited.

Next, you should erase the Auto-Fill information.

MAC (Unsure about PC):

1. Open Safari

2. Click Safari button in top left

3. Go to Preferences

4. Click the auto-fill tab and click erase

The basic rule is to never enter personal info on a site that you know is unsafe.

Norton is absolute bullshit. Get AVG or Avast those two are much much better!

 

Nearly every piece of information in this guide is incorrect.

 

The browsers that come with computers are almost always shit, especially Windows PCs. IE is a piece of shit. Enjoy your viruses.

 

IE is a trashcan. FF or Opera is the best, so I hear. I disagree with most of this as well, but at least it's well written and perhaps would help a small amount.

pretty shit guide ie & safari are shit because they allow activeX which can install stuff on your computer without you knowing NORTON BLOWS get avg or McAfee

This guide is entirely wrong. If you already "know it", you might want to step the fuck away from the computer.
