REOPENING: Make a section just for sports

I can make a section about food using this method. A few main "backers" and everyone can discuss food so much easier than sports. There's a lot more to discuss with food. You know what.. Let's have a food section.

 

Please explain how it's spam? If it's spam report it?

It's an attempt to gauge interest and find what people are interested in.

Impossible to know what people are interested in if you don't post anything new.

I actually myself have many more ideas- of competitions and discussions. However, as I already said before, I run it through Skype to see if people think it would be appropriate.

 

Can't tell if you are on some kind of drug or you really think people would support a food section. If the users of Sythe REALLY want a food section, I'm all for it. I support what the people want.

That's be awesome as hell. :nuts: I'm not sure how we are going to select those who can participate in the fantasy football league seeing as there are usually a limited number of spots, but we'll figure it out.

For those of you who are wondering, he is referring to the Sythe Sports Group Chat I made on skype. We use this as a way to discuss ideas we have without spamming or clogging up the General Discussion section. I will admit that some of the ideas we all agreed upon were not as successful as others, but thats the point of trial and error.

 

I wasn't being serious. But using the idea you posted, it's the same thing.

@Duke: I guess spam was the wrong word. In a sense though, you guys are just spamming threads. Before this suggestion, we saw two in General Discussion. Now you guys are just trying to keep everything about sports.

 

Yup, back when you first came up with the idea, there were already a good amount of sports threads in general anyway. The only sports thread I probably wouldn't have posted, in hindsight, was the California Chrome one. I did assume before I posted it that next to nobody would be interesting.

But hey, it got a few responses.

The betting thread, NBA/NHL playoff thread, and even the Superstitions thread have all panned out nicely.

Not everything will be a success. But...the content in the threads has largely differed, so it's not spam. Yeah if 10 threads were made by the same person and absolutely nobody was responding, then yeah, then it's spammy.

If the volume of threads bothers you, Stickly, what do you recommend we do? Surely we cannot cram all of the content into one thread, that would be nonsensical.

Have I created a few threads for the sole purpose of trying to elicit activity in sports discussion(s)? Absolutely, but I have done so to try and get a grasp of what types of sports people of Sythe like, if any! If it turns out there is next to no interest, trust me, I'll drop it.

However, the content I've posted does genuinely interest me, I'm not trying to spam general up with mindless garbage, I do try to put thoughts into the threads and construct them in a way that encourages conversation.

 

I posted this suggestion thread to get a taste of how many people were on board. After seeing a lot of discussion over a week, I decided it was probably justified to try and bring out some of the ideas we had thought about. The sports betting thread has been a hit. And to those who say only 3-4 people are posting on it.

Obviously those who are more dedicated will have more posts than others, but there are 9 people who have posted over 5 times in that thread.

I'm starting to agree with Ghast when he said you are backseat modding. Not to start shit, I respect your opinions a lot. But, it's starting to seem like you want to just continue arguing and disagreeing just because you can.

 

Hey Stickly, one other thing to keep in mind, Anet pitched this idea a while longer ago then this thread was created. So when he first created it, some of the most popular threads like NBA/NHL playoffs were already created, if I'm not mistaken.

There were also many other threads that have since moved off the front page and have already been exhausted in terms of discussion (however I remember a lot of great discussion coming out of it, such as a thread on the NFL draft).

Right now, I think our biggest problem is what FireZ and others have already pointed out. It would certainly be prudent to get as many members interested as possible. This would help create more free thinking in what types of discussion threads there could be.

However, I still think the main hook of a Sports section could be the competitions. I think the competitions would garner just as much if not more members coming to the section as generic sports discussion like playoff talk or whatnot.

It might even create interest in sports for those that really don't have a lot of interest in them in general.

 

This is a great point. So Stickly, Why don't you go take a look at my first thread and take note of when it was posted. And since you are interested, go take a look at when most of the active sports threads were posted.

Exactly, you have about 5-6 people active in your thread, including yourself, and it's a giveaway/gambling thread.

I continue arguing and disagreeing because I don't agree with it what is purposed. I'll argue my side until I see a result from it, or until you give me a reason to back down.

I remember it being posted before, back then I didn't think we needed one, and still don't. Like I said, there was a thread or two beforehand. Then you guys came and blew up General Discussion with sports threads in attempt to get your own section. Though I agree, competitions could be a big thing, they'll be fine in General discussion, as well as any other sports threads.

Two threads of the most "active" ones was posted before this thread was made, otherwise they were all after.

There's a reason it was denied before. Because a section is not currently needed. If the time comes where there is more activity in sports than the 5 of you, I'll gladly support.

 

By your logic. No section on all of Sythe is needed because if even one of the threads in that section has 5 or less active posters, the whole section is useless.

Honestly, it doesn't actually bother me there currently isn't a section. I think that the untapped potential of a possible renewal of the sports section does indeed have to be proven.

However, if your response is that they're fine in general discussion, I guess I don't then understand the previous premise that it was just simply spam. I appreciate you clarifying your position on that, so I won't beat a dead horse on the topic.

I just hope that now you see our aim in that. It is certainly not mine, nor anyone else's intention to be annoying with it. However, with the challenge set forth by the higher powers to be to prove its worth, very little else can be done but to make more threads + stick them in general.

Some of them will fail, some of them will thrive. I honestly cannot tell you straight up if I think a Sports section would truly thrive on Sythe. Honestly I worry about the entire health of this forum in terms of activity, because Runescape isn't exactly churning out new players nowadays.

I just hope you appreciate our efforts towards catering towards a target audience for sports discussion. I hope I've helped alleviate your concerns to a potential spam problem as well. Trust me, I ask around before posting a thread, for the exact concerns you voiced.

Ultimately, I have to hope that outsiders to our core sports topics will come, which has happened in some threads already.

Lastly, I think we all need to remember that this is a forum after all. It's fundamental design is to elicit discussion, debate, competition, etc. I don't think a high volume of threads is a problem, as long as there is A: A genuine interest in the content and B: Is not blatantly similar or the same to something already posted.

I appreciate your constructive criticism on the matter and fully and wholly agree that more needs to be proven before a section is implemented. However, a byproduct of trying to assure its implementation is going to invariably be an influx of sports related threads. That's just how it's got to be to see if this section is really worth trying to attain.

 

What the hell are you even talking about? Not a single sports thread has more then 5 members posting on it. That is what I was saying. Please read before you make yourself look like a fool.

Just to clarify a couple things though, I will.

I am not against adding new sections when it's needed, but for sports, it is currently not.

I would not support this section for at least a month, as the only time it got activity was when you guys are trying to go for a section for sports. If activity increased though, of course a section would be needed. There just isn't much interest in it, right now.

Anyways, for now I'm going to stop as I want to sleep. PM me if you have any points you wish to discuss, and I'll discuss there until some new input comes in. Anything used in PMs you can post here, if you want.

If we include fitness it shouldn't have to big of impact on activity.

I bet most users on this sythe are fat asses (no offence) and would benefit from reading workout routines, logs, diets etc etc posted in the same section.

 

It'd be nice to see who else enjoys fitness but I don't think it'd be as popular as sports.

 

Yea but it fits in well. I would not be opposed to "Sports, Health, and Fitness" or something similar.

 

Here we go. I'd support something along the lines of this. I still don't think it would grow much, from adding fitness & healthy..

 

I see it less as trying to make it grow and more as just trying to make a logically section that contains what makes sense. Should fitness not go in a sports section? Well they are very closely related so I would say yes since there isn't enough activity to split them up, type thing.
