    Religious schools... What's your view?

The proposed question/s: Should religious schools be allowed? & Should they be funded by the state [taxes] if they are exclusive for that religion.

My thoughts, I'm totally against it. The closest primary school to me is funded by the government, but only permits Catholics whom have been baptized, as a result when my mother applied for me to go there many years ago, I was denied, which meant I had to walk a lot further, to another primary school.

I think religious school encourage segregation within the community, and don't take science seriously enough. Considering Science is constantly advancing and saving lives, Religion is left in the dark ages and many of the traditions from thousands of years ago, are still practiced today. Some of which condone women.

Lastly, children at such a young age are easily subject to influence by those older than them, If they impose certain views onto these children they'll be unfairly influencing them and converting them to certain religions. Normal state schools have Religious Studies, which does not focus on one religion, and doesn't promote nor criticize another religion.

I see no reason they shouldn't be allowed in the private sector. People have to be able to teach their children what they want to, for the sake of personal freedom. Otherwise, what's to stop them from taking other personal freedoms from you? Say no to communism. It is hard, being the minority, to really make the majority realize the ignorance in their actions. If a Christian wants to tell their child that evolution is a lie and any evidence that supports it is also a lie, what are we supposed to do? Is this large scale ignorance not Darwin's theory of natural selection at its finest? Looking evidence in the face and denying it based on old values...

Government funding is bullshit though, I know at least in the United States we have separation of church and state. That would not fly over here. Just like how, being an Atheist, I never stood or recited the pledge of allegiance during homeroom because of the line "one nation under God" in our pledge.

I don't think religious schools should be allowed because honestly, eventually everyone has to decide whether they want to be religious/what religion/etc and from my personal experiences, when you force religion on someone, they tend to lash against it.

    tl;dr; No religious schools.

It is against the law for a government funded school to deny freedom of religion. It is your constitutional right - at least in the US. Dunno about the UK

In the private sector, there is nothing wrong with religious schools.

Nobody said anything about religious freedom in public schools.. Religious freedom and having a school based around religion are separate things

No one is forced to go to said school by the government... they have the freedom to do so if they choose. Why are they different things? Are religious freedom and having a church based around religion separate things?
There shouldn't be public funding though, especially as that raises the dicier issue of determining which religiously-based schools get the funding.

On a side note, the meaning of "separation of church and state" has been distorted somewhat (http://www.straight-talk.net/socas/s-amendment.shtml)

I have no problem with religious schools.
But, if the school is racist against other cultures, I am totally against it.
    I mean;
If a Muslim kid was enrolled to a Catholic school and everybody was being racist or excluded him out cause he wasn't Catholic, I am against it.
Even though that's unlikely in my country.

A Muslim would not be accepted into a catholic school, the point is religious schools are for that particular religion only, and encourage segregation within the community.

I have the same issue with things such as the Apostle's Creed at my school. As long as I'm not forced to do anything against my personal beliefs and values I have absolutely no problem with privately funded religious schools.

I think you misunderstood me. At least in the USA, we all have religious freedom anywhere we go. Does this mean that we should have prayer time in public schools? No. Most if not all public schools have a moment of silence sometime during the day, which is pretty much the designated time to do whatever ritual you want. I'm just saying, public schools aren't required or even supposed to accommodate religious practices. A private institute wanting to have an all Catholic population is perfectly fine, though.

Also, that bit about separation of church and state doesn't really tell me anything new. A lot of the forefathers were Christian, so of course they had Christian influence. The law does explicitly state that the government is not to favor any particular religion, though. Funding any sort of religious school would lend to favoring whatever religion that school follows. The US government wouldn't step over that line because once they start funding Christian schools, then Islamic schools are going to be clamoring for funding as well, and so is every other religion.

I go to one, and honestly it's freaking annoying. Like seriously your not allowed to wear any clothes that have swearwords or any thing that supports another religion besides Christianity. I wish they weren't allowed. >.>

In England, there are still many christian schools that are funded by the government. I don't believe however, that Islamic schools are, nor any of the other religions besides Christians/Catholics.

It is surprising to me really, because many of the southern states of the USA, are considerably more religious than where I reside [London].

Privatized funding for religious schools is fine, but I don't support government funded religious schools. England, however, is still a place that administers a monarchy which must have something to do with a religiously influenced government.

I go to a religious school. This is purely because its better than pretty much every other school in the area.

    It's semi-independent.

That's unfortunate. I believe to have a strong government, religion must be kept out of it as much as possible. Anything that can hinder the effectiveness of organized government should be dealt with.

Yeah, despite the South (I actually live in the South) being so religious, we still don't have government funded religious schools, simply because it would be against the law. We do have tons of Christian schools in my area though. I actually went to one until I was in like 3rd grade. Admittedly it did help me in certain ways such as establishing a good moral guideline, but looking back on it I really wish I hadn't gone. The curriculum was terrible, and the teachers were mean as shit. I'd NEVER sent my child to one, I know that much. I can give them the same headstarts I got from religion without all the lies and things surrounding it.

Generally they accommodate religious practices to the extent of allowing groups to meet on school property, and perhaps a few other accommodations, but the groups or meetings are not officially associated with the school. I believe that in the U.S. the policy is that if they allow any non-school related groups to meet or form on campus, they have to allow all (within reason). I could be mistaken though.
I believe there are also exceptions for individual students (ex. prayers for Islamic students who do so at set times), but once again, I'm not sure.

On the whole though, I did misunderstand, and agree with most of what you said.

Fair enough. I agree that religious schools shouldn't be publicly funded.

I went to a Quaker high school where I received an amazing education and concluded that there isn't a god. Although I don't believe people should force their ideas on others, I don't see a problem with religious schools as long as they are not publicly funded.
