How long do you think OSRS will last?

I'm curious to see, how long do you think old school runescape will last before jagex decides its not worth paying to keep the servers up any longer due a declining playerbase?

 

Although I personally don’t play anymore, it seems like the game still has 100k+ users playing during peak hours. While I know that a percentage of those users are bots, that still seems pretty solid to me.

Given the dedicated player base, I don’t know if I see it going anywhere in the next couple of years at least.

 

With the price of gold dropping super hard, I can't help but think majority of those players are actually bots. Supply is getting way more than demand. Just speculation.

 

The player-base is alive and well, besides the economy due to bots/exploits. I wouldn't think it's going any where for quite some time.

 

I noticed the price of gold has dropped significantly throughout the years, and especially throughout the past 12 months. Why do you think so?

 

Multiple people Exploiting the Game (Bugs), Been several instances this year where so much money got dumped into the economy due to that. The bots don't help either. Bounty Hunter returning dumped so much gold back into the economy due to being exploited as well. With every update it seems the players find more exploits. Its fixing to get weird with possible new skill, and content coming lately.

 

I see. Bounty hunter has no monetary rewards besides the loot crates, which are dropped by chance & targets can't be farmed so I don't really see how a dupe was possible. Unless you mean the BH update created a dupe elsewhere in the game.

The drop in gold this year has been disproportionate in comparison to the years prior since release. Removal of a huge gold sink in the duel arena might contribute to this as well. Anyway thank you for your input

The Game Has been broken multiple times in 22' and 23' due to exploits. If 1-player can exploit the game enough to shake the economy just imagine if its being done by multiple people. Even right now people are abusing some invincibility glitch to Farm Bosses among other things. You cant really correlate a games longevity with it's own fake currency (RS3 would be Long-Gone). The game will go-on but the economy will probably forever suffer due to its own players.

 

People have been asking this question since 2007. Jagex has publicly stated that the server costs of osrs are almost nothing. They'd likely never pull the plug on the servers- just stop updates. There's over a million active players on the game. It's going nowhere anytime soon.

I think osrs and runescape 3 will be around for a very long time, no matter who owns the company. runescape is the only successful IP Jagex has ever produced in almost a quarter of a century, and that's not for lack of trying. last i heard in 2020/2021(?) the company was bought for $530m and their revenue has been growing year on year since then. after the next year whoever bought the company will have made more than their $530m investment, which is a pretty good turn around for them.
Bonds (in osrs&rs3) and MTX (in rs3) will be a pretty huge part of revenue too, i imagine, MTX more so

if you look at osrs updates since CoX was introduced, it's been in a direction to add content that is in line with what is found in other video games, raids, bosses and raw GP being 3 main examples.

raids & bosses: pretty self explanatory.

raw gp: an overwhelming amount of raw materials come into the game from bosses, botting, and a small % from people actually training skills, and the price of a lot of those items has been and still is dropping, with some random rise and falls due to updates or other factors. the easiest way to remedy that is to create updates that can tie alch values to item values - if items drop below their alch price it's presumably inevitable someone will take advantage of that and the market value will be balanced towards it's alch price.

I also think ironman modes are such a massive selling point for people who have never/haven't played runescape for a long time.

My prediction is the game will be around for at the very least 10 years, but maybe i'm crazy.

A while, the real question is how long will RS3 last... they should've given up on RS3 a long time ago.

 

Although RS3 has been around for a long time and should be a reflection of how long OSRS will be around for, its clear for anyone to say that OSRS is losing players at mass every year due to either a lack of certain updates, or updates that certain players don't want to see introduced.

The aforementioned with the addition of no young people joining the game, and the average age of players being 20+ its going to continue declining in population unfortunately, its just a matter of years, the streamers are currently keeping players interested in the game, once they lose interest then others will too.

 

Interesting take. It seems to me OSRS is the MOST POPULAR its been ever.
