Protein Before or After?

    Protein Before or After?

    I take my whey protein after my workouts but I'm not really sure if I should. Some people say to take before, or after, and even both. Anyone know?

    It makes sense to take it before, because you can burn more calories, I'm not an expert, try google.com :)

    Take after, when I workout I take mine after so does all of my hockey team. Although I've never asked myself if I should take before.

    take your "whey" protein after your workout, atmost 60 minutes, and if you haev "casein", take it before bed, you do not need to take protein before your workout, even if you did, do you think once you drink it you instantly get a boost straight after? It needs to digest.


    Take a GOOD healthy carb/protein meal 2 hours before your workout, that's great fuel, and take the protein after when your muscles need it most, just remember that protein isn't your bodys main source of fuel, your bodys main source of fuel is glycogen, so thats why you need carbs before workout

    You should take your Protein before you do your workout it seems to help me whenever I take it before I start working out.

    After. You have about a one hour window after you stop working out for the protein to be most effective.

    You have a 30 minute to an hour window after you workout where you should eat something, as that is the time period when it is most beneficial for your muscles to get nutrients. If your taking something like a protein shake it would be most effective during this window.

    Both.
    I'm currently a trainee to get a license to be a private health trainer, and I was told that you should consume your protein at least 30 minutes before a workout, and in less than 30 minutes after a workout, because your body will get the most out of it during that period.

    Since eating 30 minutes before a workout isn't ideal, I'd recommend that you buy a vat of protein powder. I bought one for around $160 and it tastes like chocolate milk :)

    Whey protein is a supplement, and thus you can basically take it anytime you want when you feel like you didn't get enough protein. Now there is one important thing, the one hour window of opportunity right after an intense workout is a MUST. That's when your muscles are in need of the most BCAA and other nutrients. It is also important to eat a healthy nutrient full meal at most 2hrs after your intense workout (I eat my 100% whey protein exactly right after my workout and 1 hour after that I consume a good meal that contains a serving of protein, carbs, and veggies). In conclusion, whey protein is exactly what is says it is, it's a supplement, it's there to help you fill out your protein needs and its not to be replaced by food rich in nutrients. (I take 2 shakes a day in order to get up to 190g of protein each day) And this info is very accurate, I'm studying to be a nutritionist :)

    EDIT: (It's also possible that you consume a shake before your workout, it has to be at least an hour before though, no less than that.)

    I thought this, but I was told by a fitness guy in my area that I should use it afterwards. This seems the most sensible option

    This is truely sad

    You're becoming a fitness trainer, I would like to know who your teacher is, he told you to take a protein shake 30 minutes before?

    You pretty much contradicted yourself when you said "Since eating 30 minutes before a workout isn't ideal", then you shouldn't have THAT FOOD 30 MINUTES BEFORE!!

    Everybody has their own methods. Dont be ignorant and accept that people have their own ways.
    Does both 30minutes before and after sound like a bad idea? Well, it sure as hell works.

    I drink half my protein shake before I workout and then drink the rest after my workout.

    I know everyone has their own ways, you even said it yourself, but from what you have written, you have claimed that your fitness trainer says to take a shake 30mins before and after a workout.

    You follow by stating the benefits of why you should take it AFTER, and not before. I'm going by the assumption he has educated you, why didn't he tell you the benefits of having it before!

    Yes, in the end it's what works for the individual, however what's really in the end is finding what works to give the individual maximal growth, not what just works.

    Also, if i were being ignorant, don't you want to find out the scientific reason why you should take your protein 30-60 minutes after? Post workout your muscles are fille with massive amounts of blood to your working muscles, it's with this timeframe that nutrients, such as high g.i food (shakes) help repair and refuel the muscles since more blood is being pumped there

    Care to elaborate on how it benefits before, and not just because it's a placebo effect?

    Well it seems that you misunderstood what I said, it's might be my fault that that happened, so let me reiterate.

    I've learnt that you should consume your protein 30 minutes both before and after you work out, because your body will absorb the most of it if you do so.

    When I said eat, I was referring to food. Food as in solids that you have to chew on and takes a while to digest. When I said consume and drink, I was referring to the protein shake.

    No, i havent learned exactly why its beneficial to drink your protein both before and after, nor do I feel the need to. Besides, if somebody asks, I can alwys point my fingers at other people who do so and have lots of muscle, and that would be enough.

    If I wanted to learn the exact reasons, then I would have taken a biology course. There is no need to waste my time and money on doing that when the only time it will be useful is when I am having an argument over the internet.

    You can say "Post workout your muscles are fille with massive amounts of blood to your working muscles, it's with this timeframe that nutrients, such as high g.i food (shakes) help repair and refuel the muscles since more blood is being pumped there" (copy paste because im on my iphone) but what's more inportant is the observable results. Out of the many trainers and athletes that I've met and talked to, the ones who took their protein before and after had more proteins than those who took it after.

    Yes, the most important is the results in the end, however I do not see how the reasoning to why it works is biology? Do you not want to know the reasoning behind what happens? The internet these days is full of BULLSHIT, 90% of supplements want your cash, and 80% don't even know what they're talking about, if you want to be certain about something, don't you want to know the reasoning behind it? Surely it is not biology, I would categorize it under physical education.

    This goes for everything in life as well. you can't accept BS that is written in articles, journals and on the news, you have to be a critical thinker and not someone that accepts everything.

    After, I have just qualified to be a personal trainer. Before you workout you should eat a meal rich in carbs and protein, obviously dont eat then workout straight after tho lol.
