What languages should I know to get a programing job?

 

The main languages are probably a good start.

C/C++, C#, Java, PHP, Python etc.

Although, it will take you years of experience before you're good enough to be hired for anything near complex.

 

I would suggest you learn PHP. It'll get you a lot of web design jobs, and not to mention, even with a little knowledge on it, you can easily get a simple, high paying freelance job.

Python really isn't a main language as far as I know... It isn't high in demand as the others you listed.

 

Ah, well I haven't really gotten in to Python, so I don't know. All I know is that either all of or parts of Battlefield 2 were written in Python.

Pick one, focus on it, and attempt to make it your strongest point, etc.

Battlefield probably has some small parts written in Python. You will almost never find any mainstream program written in Python. Maybe some sort of built in scripting language using Python or something. This is partially due to the fact that Python apps are hard to distribute, considering the only "compiler" (compiler in the sense that it is made into bytecode then exe) comes out to have thousands of files, and the main executable is around 3 or 4 mb. That, and the GUIs in Python are pretty much lame.

 

No. Do not intend to learn ALL of them. Most programmers use one language as their main choice, and then know a little in other languages for general use.

As cp said, you can get good jobs working with languages like PHP easily, as it's coders are in high demand due to today's frequent use of the internet. Similarly, this can be applied to languages like Java.

If you want to get in to core application development (instead of internet development) then it will probably be a lot harder. I've been working with C++ for a while, and even then I'm not the best at it.

Well, when i was 13, i bought a C++ book and went through it in 2 months, played around a little with it and stopped for a while. Just came back and decided to learn PHP, CSS, HTML; it only took me a week or two and i can get freelance jobs pretty easily. Also, C++ is not only great if you're planning on developing software, but it won't take you long to learn any other programming language if you at least get the basics of C++.
