    Processors: i5 versus i7

So what exactly is the difference between the Intel i5 processor and the Intel i7 processor? (Other than an extra $200 in laptop retail price)

Well, the i7 has more cores and is a bit more powerful than the i5.

Personally the i5 is fine for what you need, unless you are some hardcore botter or something. i7's are only if you're looking to show off most of the time.

So, assuming I would only run up to 3 bots at once on a laptop... an i5 would work fine? (assuming I had enough RAM)

3 bots should be ok, provided your RAM is good. I'm not very knowledgeable on botting, though. Try asking in the RS Cheating section if you'd like to get a few more specifics on botting.

3 bots will be absolutely fine if nothing else bottlenecks it.

I was able to run 2-3 RsBuddy bots on an AMD Phenom II, 4gb Ram, and an integrated gfx w/ my laptop.

Just get 8gb of ram and a decent GPU with the i5.

I've got an i5 2500k and could run 7 bots with 8gb of ram.

The main difference between i7 and i5s is the i7s use of hyperthreading.

In a laptop an i5 is always dualcore.
However most of the i7's in laptops are quadcore :p Some are dualcore though but you only see those in ultrabooks to increase the amount of hours you can use it to about 7 hours :)

I personally have a laptop with an i7 and it's actually better than the i7 in my PC according to the windows index (unreliable probably) :p But yeah to run a few bots an i5 is perfectly fine, make sure you get a decent videocard like a 630m and 6-8gb ram. Those laptops are around 600€, a friend of mine recently bought one just like that. I'll try to find the site and get the model name for you :p

    EDIT: Acer Aspire V3-571G-53214G50Makk

Wrong wrong wrong. There are quad core i5 laptops, but they are few and far between. And the premium that is charged for them is not worthwhile...may as well just step to an i7.

There are may discerning factors, the use of hyperthreading being one of them, yes The main difference though imo, is their levels and size of cache. This is a very important factor in how the processor is going to handle routine tasks, and how the processor will distribute the data. Very commonly accessed data will often be stored in the cache. Why? Because it is 25 - 100x faster than RAM is, therefore you end up with less hangups while the CPI is looking fr the data it needs to complete the task at hand. These hangups may be miniscule, maybe 25 ms or so, but it still affects overall usability. This is particularly useful when running data intensive programs like editing it engineering-type programs...but also comes into play with games, too. Some CPUs dont have an l3 cache, l2 is their highest. The l3 cache is larger than the l2, but slower. It is still much faster than ram, though, and having the l3 cache can greatly improve performance of the CPU.
Hyper threading pertains to how data or tasks are handled, where the computer will separate them into multiple threads, assigned to a particular core on the CPU. This allows much more data to be processed at one time.

Another thing is the turbo boost feature, which basically overclocks the CPU when extra processing power is needed. Some of the 2nd gen CPUs dont have this feature
