Private Server for a game?

The multiplayer servers for Empire Earth are being shut down and people are trying to buy the server software from Sierra, which I do not think will happen. Does anyone think there is open source software out on the internet somewhere that could be modified to be used, or does anyone think that they could write server software for the game. I could not pay you, but I bet someone would be glad to pay, if it can be done that is.

Its only a lobby we need, so its not that horrible. We would need:

Registration / Log In
Chat
Friends (They might be stored on the client)
Game browser
Version Check
Password changer
Most likely a few other things...

Any info on this topic in general would be great... I am going to go on a google searching spree now to try and learn something my self...
