New scam technique..?

K so I was pretty much tricked into this (almost) thanks to F J T for being smart and double checking with me before I ended up helping a scammer commit a scam.........

Anyway I get added on msn by [email protected] he brings up selling rsgp, I'm like cool I'll buy a few hundred mil off ya, he then goes on about unlocking his paypal which I said I'll wait.

15mins or so goes by and he says he's ready but could I do an MM first? I'm like okay I guess but I wanna make it quick because I have been up far too long.. so yeah long story short he says the buyer wants to add me on skype to discuss, it's him instead of the buyer (NRSS btw if anyone's interested is the Skype name used)...

Has me pm F J T to confirm he's talking to me and yeah so F J T catches on and let's me know what's going on.. I'm sure this has happened before but thought I'd through it out there I found it pretty elaborate. Anyway I've also been up for 50+ hours work/sythe/gym/household shet etc..

Moving on if this is the wrong section sorry you can move it; I'm off to bed and kudos again to F J T for letting me know! Helping a scammer scam = bad news XOXOXOXO <3 cyas.

 

It's actually pretty old. People have been doing it for years. >_<

If every PM confirmation included the middleman's MSN, the other traders MSNs, and a copy of the chat we'd essentially make this scam ineffective.

 

He tried it on me just now.
It aint new but it is a tricky one.

I would advice when someone asks a PM to include your MSN.

He tried to phish me, but luckily I noticed the link was fake
I forgot to screenshot this one discusion :/ so you'll just have to take my word for it and double check everything he posts if you know who he is

 

If you randomly get added you shouldn't accept it.
If you do and they try and sell/buy something with you even saying you want to buy/sell anything then you should simply ignore them


Unless you have a thread saying you're buying/selling then they are normally scams. I've never been scammed due to my own faults because I see everyone I trade with as a scammer and use absolute caution.

Also i had also gotten tried this scam technique but it failed luckily.

 

yea, it's an old but complicated technique.

Usually people like them (omm, mod, staff) will never add you asking for a trade. It's kinda like how people in high positions don't look for people, because they have people come to them.

I speak to a few mods/admins/OMM's in IRC and not one of them has added me and asked to trade.
I trust the ones I speak to because I've spoken to most of them for a year+ if I've never spoken to you I don't trust you most of the time.

 

Wait im confused , Is this the same as the talk back method ? or is this impostering the seller to get the seller a pm

well im glad you caught your self before your scammed. Scammers are like books no matter how many times you read them they never change... this is probably going to become more common now

 

Just going to put this out there, when i MM i make everyone include both emails + my email.

i've had one guy try to imposter me, while trading with me rofl.

I'm not sure if I thoroughly read this enough, but if you mean that you talked to an imposter, who had another person talk to the trusted person who was going to MM the trade, to get them to send a PM to you, then yes this is extremely common and you need to be very careful. Every once in awhile someone will come forward to me with an outragously good deal and rush the trade without asking for a PM, without asking payment methods, and was ready to meet me in game for a $4k~ or so deal 1-2 minutes into our msn conversation, I can usually predict what they're trying to do right at the beginning of the conversation.

Oxodium was banned for a few hours because he was a victim of this "imposter scam", luckily, the person who scammed the gold pretending to be oxodium ended up selling me the gold, and it was as simple as checking my chat logs to see that the rs username the faking oxodium used in the scam was the same rsn that traded me, and I had the chat logs at the time to back all this up. If I didn't, even n4n0 said it would of been hard to know whether oxodium did it or not.


The moral of the story: When you pm someone, include your email and specifically say "DO NOT TRADE IF THIS IS NOT THE EMAIL YOU"RE SPEAKING WITH"

 

i honestly dont get why people scam.
I mean do they not feel bad when they scam people?
