In the traditional market places in Kerala direct selling has traditionally meant contracting by outside agencies with wholesalers to move surplus or promotional products.* In other instances, small businessmen resorted to door-to-door selling because of their inability to compete in the retail market.* It has also meant deploying employees to demonstrate products and conduct direct sales with the sole objective of increasing on the spot sales of new products.
    *
In Marine Drive and other prominent localities, on the other hand, the multinational companies have begun moving products directly from the manufacturer to the consumers, without any intermediaries, by starting their own direct selling units. In this form, the need for an extensive commercial or distribution infrastructure is de-emphasized.* Also, de-emphasized is the role of traditional product advertising etc.* This character also represents a type of conflict that affects both the developments in the urban areas and the people residing therein.
