Pokemon Go Plus question

Does anyone know if there's a difference to the Pokemon Go Plus japanese import than the one here in US? Ive want to get my brother one for Christmas, but the US version seems to be way more expensive, like 130$. I'm curious if anyone has bought one overseas and tried connecting with it. Does it work the same?

You can buy them locally at toys r us. They are getting them for xmas.
