I think the post count feature already serves as a decent indicator of activity on the forums. Additionally adding a way to purchase miniranks would just again increase incentive to spam posts that just pass the character limit. It's not as easy as "mods will just delete their spam posts" - it can still be contributing in a sense to the thread but have the main motive for posting to be to gain a point, so it won't technically count as spam but will still for all intents and purposes be a shitpost.

 

Yeah, but then that post would be able to be responded to, creating more discussion. As of now we have threads in some sections created months ago on the first page. Are we going to discourage potential conversation because a few posts initial intentions were to work toward potential miniranks?

 

Sorry, my point didn't really come across, didn't really make it clear. I'm not worried about actual conversation started by posts that were made by people to work towards minis, more worried by posts that technically aren't spam yet don't contribute anything towards potential discussion. You know when vaders spam posts for postcount and they're all short with a few words each yet not technically spam? Like there'll be a thread talking about, idk the current botting scene in rs, and they'll post "bottings unsafe I got banned for it". Stuff like that may happen more if this change gets implemented, hope that sorta clears it up a bit

 

I think incentivizing people with points toward minis with real $ value for posting is problematic, and I think off-topic sections are active enough already

 

yeah I know what you mean, and I feel like this can be handled on a case-by case basis. I will admit 100% that I from time to time make posts like that. Hell, I made one in this thread a few days ago without even realizing it until I came back to read it to see if anyone else had any input on this suggestion.

Is this post spam? Not technically, but if I was posting generic, mindless comments like this over and over again, it would be. I would imagine the same approach would be taken if this system were in place.

Just a quick browse down the front page and I open up all of these dead sections. None of these are particularly un-interesting either. Maybe a small incentive to post around the forums a bit more would drive users into sections they hadn't used before, so we won't have threads from 2+ months ago still on the first page of the section.

 

Sounds like a good idea to promote activity. I especially like the idea to limit people with active infraction points on their accounts. Besides, if there's spam, I'm sure our moderator team can take care of it swiftly

 

I support the idea of points and exchanging them for miniranks. However I do not support the way you suggest implementing them. I do not like the idea of them being able to be traded, diced, exchanged, etc. with other users. This will just add another pointless Sythe.org-oriented market that has no true value, although users will try assigning a value to them, much like what has been done with miniranks. The way I suggest implementing them is so that they solely benefit the user obtaining them. Perhaps the points can be aimed towards some form of goal. For example, say that when you reach 100 points, you are able to use them on a mystery box/prize box sort of deal (not exchange it directly for a prizebox minirank), in which you will receive a random minirank (from the pool of ones that can actually be traded.) If the user wishes to sell or trade said minirank afterwards, then so be it, but the points should be earned by and exclusive to each user.

 

I agree that this might be a better implementation. It doesn't make sense to have a market for points when we already have a market for miniranks (which is basically the only thing points would be used for, if I read the op correctly), keeping it as a sort of personal "achievement" system with the option of allowing users to trade/sell off their rewards if they want to.

 

Would anyone be able to comment on if this would be possible technology wise?

I don't think the people that would actually have the power to change this actively brows the suggestions section.

I know Xen behaves differently than VB does, maybe switching forums will open doors and make this suggestion possible.

Don't want to see this die even if it's not my idea. Would be neat to see a system that encourages activity, and may be possible with the Xen changes (possibly with the trophy system).

There seems to be an existing XenForo addon created by a well known org that accomplishes a lot of the features that are mentioned in the OP.

Oh wow I didn't even know this was out there, that's really neat. I don't know how hard it would be to actually implement but it's nice to see there is something similar if not the same as what was suggested. Hopefully once Xen is running smoothly something like this could actually be done.

 

Definitely support. This builds incentive to post, increases overall forum activity and should be considered by staff.

 

It's actually pretty interesting given the options like "auto-bump thread" etc in exchange for points. The only issue I could see in the future is people spamming to obtain points.

 

Would be neat to see "Change UT for a week" or "Pick a free Minirank for this month" be options as well. I'm not too sure how the system works but it seems like we could get pretty creative with the rewards.

I think it will promote spamming, but once people start to receive an infraction or two they'll wisen up and post quality content. I think the possibility of people spamming is worth the activity that a system like this can promote.
