I'm beginning to seriously consider investing in a playstation 2. Many of the games on that system are basically my childhood (Resident Evil, Dino Crisis, etc)

Before actually making this purchase, I figured I'd make a thread and get some opinions.

Has anyone else succumbed to nostalgia and bought an old system (PS1, PS2, N64, dreamcast, etc)? How well did that decision work for you? Are they as enjoyable as I remember?

For those of you that are familiar with the PS2, please recommend some games!

I caved and bought an old ps2 about a year or so ago mainly to play champions of norath with a few friends.. Since then I've bought an ton of games for about a buck a peace, I'll try to remember them all.

    mark of kri
    goblin commander
indiana jones (forget which one, the older ps2 one)
    both champions of norath
    baldurs gate
    time splitters future perfect
    god of war games
    jak and daxter 1-3
    rachet and clank #1
    madden 04-09
    maxtrix path of neo
    jaws the game
    Shadow of the colossus

    That's all I remember atm..

For game recommandations, I'd look into all I've mentioned plus whatever you played as a kid for nostalgic purposes.

1$ per?? can't beat that! Have you had many problems with the hardware? Just due to the systems being old? My dad actually has a PS1 and he still plays one of the first games released for it with no problems aside from occasional freezing (although it always jumps back to the position it's supposed to be in -- I think that happened even when everything was new, lol).

from your list I'm definitely getting

    God of war
    R and C
    champion
    mark
    balders
    time splitter
    j and D
& probably one of the maddens, probably the 09.

    thanks a lot man :)

may I ask how much you ended up buying the actual PS2 for?

50$ from some crackhead on craigslist. And to address the hardware, yeah it can occasionally freeze/not work.

If you can find one at a yard sale you'll be able to grab it cheap and most likely with a bunch of games. Then its not much of an investment. Just would take some time to find.

    Playstation 2 Questions

I own every retro console from the NES onwards and have literally hundreds of retro games.

I love them absolutely love them, I own a ps2 aswell, I still play through Dark Cloud, it's unreal, DBZ budokai, bounty hunter Jango fett was also great, also so many amazing ps1 games.

It's not all about nostalgia, it's normaly just about going back and playing something more simple and fun.

Baldur's Gate! I spent tons of hours playing that game with either friends or just by myself. A ps2 is worth getting for that game and Gran Turismo alone in my opinion.

I actually have never got rid of any of my old consoles, except for gameboys which had been dropped over the years.

I occasionally crack out my master system (has mega drive converter, 100+ games for each system), my N64 (sadly only around 5 games left, only really play banjo kazoee though), ps1 for some good old gta 1/London and Spyro, ps2 for champions of norath 1 and 2 and baulders gate, and rarely my xbox for gun and fable 1 :).

I will always keep these consoles, for nostalgia and when I have children, to show them what real games are.

I think you'd be better off getting a older console like the mega drive/ master system, the amount of games is purely amazing, not to mention the quality. The fact that they are cartridges helps a lot, they are virtually indestructible unlike the systems, which is where you will spend your money.

I still have my PS2, gamecube etc but I usually play on emulators because I can't be arsed hooking up my old systems plus you can make the graphics look AMAZING. Also I recommend final fantasy 10, 12, burnout 3 and burnout revenge, Persona 3 and 4, Tom Clancy Rainbow six, and Gta all I can think of for now.

bought a dreamcast recently just to play phantasy star online.

Bought my son a gamecube and an N64, i admit, i play with him all the time >_<

    I'd honestly purchase a PS1 or PS2 to play FF7 and FF10 on.

    Playstation 2 Questions

I brought a PS2 a little over a year ago to do the same as you, relive my childhood gaming haha. Picked the console up for around £15-£20, and games are no more than £0.50p-£2.50, except the occasional rare ones.

My honest experience was.. I nearly cried. It was so so bad haha. I remembered games being fantastic, and upon replaying them, they're fucking woeful for lack of a better term. Take Star Wars Battlefield 2 for example; I love it, played it for hour upon hour, but, replaying it last year totally killed all good memories of it for me, the graphics are poor, along with them game play and game mechanics.

I did have some good experiences though, replaying some of the old WWE/WWF games was hilarious, with all the old wrestlers.. must admit that was fun :D! I replayed Jak & Daxter, Ratchet & Clank and some of the Spyro's and Crash Bandicoots.. games like that were so much fun. But I couldn't overlook the poor graphics since I was used to top end PC/X360 ones.

My honest opinion is this; If you don't mind the poor graphics, game play and mechanics and want to play them for nostalgia alone - Do it. You'll love it. But, bare in mind replaying a game and realizing how far gaming has come ruined it all for me, and could do the same for you!
