What do you guys think of the recent trend in the NBA where GMs and owners of their teams look to hire seasoned vets rather than someone who has had head coaching experience.

For example, Jason Kidd to the Brooklyn Nets and it seems that Derek Fisher will be going to the Knicks.

I personally am a fan of them because those new coaches can relate to the players so easily and know how it is to play the game. You don't see this too often in the NFL or NHL, but I could see it happening eventually.

What do you guys think?

This has been going on for a while now. Looking at your avatar, I see you're a heat fan. Did you know Pat Riley (current heat president) was a NBA player, who retired into head coach? It's a rare occurrence but it is nothing new.

If it turns into a trend that seems to work I see becoming more of something that's happening. For example Steve Nash I think he would make an excellent coach.

I think certain players would make good coaches.

I also think the vast majority would not.

I think it's great in some cases - odd that the execs are willing to take that kind of risk but I suppose the pay-off is when you have completely raw intelligence and basketball IQ to form good coaching practices with.

I like the higher risk for these guys because they've been through it and know how things feel. That's something that head coach's don't always have---being able to relate to the players and get your point across.

The NHL is actually starting to do it, Patrick Roy coaching the Avalanche this past yr, and he actually did a fantastic job.

Ryan Giggs at Manchester United becoming Interim manager and now permanent assistant manager.

It's happening a lot nowadays, it's an interesting mindset that these player turned coaches can bring to the table.

I agree about the mindset. Player to coach brings in that fresh player mentality that can help you get points across to members of the team and such.

No one can be better to give advice than someone who knows game. I hope Fisher won't disappoint. Hope to see some light on the Jackson-Fisher Knicks. And I hope Anthony would stay at Knicks :3

I think Knicks have a ton of talent, they just aren't very good chemistry wise. However, I wouldn't be sad to see Melo go to the Heat
