Peer Pressure

Does it exist?

I was talking to a friend the other day, and he happened to go to a party and got drunk. I asked him why he would do that (im straight edge) and he said peer pressure made him do it.

Well, i have been offered weed, cigarettes, alcohol, and turned it down every single time.

So my question is, does it exist?

 

For the weak of mind, Peer Pressure does exist. I was encouraged into smoking by some friends back in years 10 & 11. It's just the thought that others are doing something, and you should do it too to make them have a higher opinion of you. Pity it makes no difference

 

Yes, it exists, but no it's not an excuse.

 

Precisely... Peer pressure has ALWAYS been around... However if you give in you can't use peer pressure as an excuse... Use your inability too cope as an outcast as your reason instead... If you give in too it you either a) really wanted too do it too begin with or b) are just a weak person plain and simple.

 

Um, i dont know about you, but i could care less what others think of me. I have been offered drugs numerous times, i have gone to several parties with alcohol, but never took anything.

If you cant make decisions for yourself you are a complete fuck up ....

On the side note I have been smoking marijuana and hashish for the past 3 or 4 years. I also drink and have the occasional cigarette . But never have I even thought of touching any other man made drug . That bullshit about marijuana being a gateway drug is complete bullshit . It is the people that have a weak mindset that go to other drugs and become worthless retard addicts that make a bad name for marijuana smokers. Why do you think marijuana is illegal? Because the government cant make money off of it because anyone with a brain in their skull can grow it , which results in no profit or gain for the government. Have you ever seen anyone die from smoking marijuana? NO ...

I rest my case I can go on and on about this I better stop

no, your wrong. those who have never had peer pressure dont have peers (friends)

you cant seriously say you havnt done something because your friends in any way "pressured" you to. peer pressure can be friendly, your teachers will always talk about the negative pressure your peers have on you, but there are alot of positives from it.

 

I never said i didn't do it because my friends pressured it upon me, but the reason i don't do it is because i don't want it to control my life (yes, i will get attacked for this sentence) but that's just how i feel.

I dont know about you, but making alcohol really isn't hard.

 

To generalize, peer pressure is the pressure exerted by a peer group upon an individual to change their behavior or attitude. It does exist and it affects everybody. It's not just limited to drinking at parties, but your political beliefs, religious beliefs and your views in general. To what extent it affects you depends on how stubborn you are, but often it'll affect you without you noticing it and putting up resistance.

 

Exists, but damn it's not hard to say no? Are there really serverely weak minded people out there?

Peer preasure does exist. It doesn't always come as a "Do this, or i'm not going to be your friend". Sometimes it works like this;

You decline a beer, and your friend starts to leave, they start to talk to you less - you feel bad, you accept the beer. Congratulations, you've just given into peer preasure.

 

People should not be intimidated by others to do things their not satisfied to do.

 

you cant just assume that he is weak minded. He has probably been curious about doing it for some time and it was his friends that introduced him to it. If its something that you wouldn't mind doing anyway how does it make you weak minded? I mean if someone pressured you to go talk to some hot chick, would you think you would be weak minded to do it? no.

You can be under peer pressure and not even realise. you have all your friends around you and that they are doing something that you don't really want to do, but you do it anyway to not be an outsider. they don't have to verbally pressure you, but you will feel pressured because you don't want to feel left out.

Iv pressured people to jump off bridges, even one who was scared of heights lol. that doesn't make them weak, i think it makes them stronger to step outside of there comfort zone with a little help of peer encouragement.

Also, there are times you have to either go with peer pressure, or go home and be a looser. say all your friends want to go to piont A, but you want to go to piont B. you dont say no im not going to piont A because i dont want to, you gota just go with the group sometimes. people will think your a tosser if you only think of yourself and not your friends.

 

of course, thats the reason why most kids do stupid stuff, to show off to their friends, or peer pressure

 

Okay, but i guess my main point is now this, is it an excuse?

I still don't see why people do the things in the first place, but whatever.
