the reason is because, republicans are also traditionalists who keep the traditions that the founding fathers had and base their values off them.

democrats are secular progressives that think everything needs to be changed.

As far as I know, they were the party that stood up for freeing the African American slaves. But I don't know much else about American history/politics.

Macro - you're pretty much dead-on, Republicans passed the 14th and 15th Amendments after Lincoln's assasionation (Radical Republicans), and they swore vengance on the south, so therefore by making African-Americans have more rights, african americans figured keeping republicans in office was the best idea since they showed concern for the black well-being. Congress also passed that Former-Condfederate officers couldn't hold office nor vote, and most ex-confederates were democrats.
