Should my laptop be overheating with these specs?

Hi I recently bought a Dell Inspiron 15R laptop and have noticed that it heats up playing quite a lot of games, including runescape. According to many temp readers, my temperature when doing normal things is about 35-40 but when I play runescape in lowest detail or highest detail, the temp goes about to about 65 (the detail doesnt make much of a difference strangely) after 20 minutes. The fan starts to go very loudly and the laptop gets quite hot. As soon as I shut runescape, everything drops and cools down again.

    Here are my specs
    Core i3-370M 2.4ghz
    4GB RAM
    640GB 7200RPM HDD
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 1GB (I expected RS to be like pacman for this graphics card)

I think thats all thats relavant, if there is anything else please ask.

    Thanks

How old is the laptop? If it is over a year old, or you use it on a bed/similar unflat surface, it may be a build up of dust inside the laptop.

It is just over a month old. I only use it on a flat hard wooden table. I have looked everywhere and can find no dust buildup anywhere, as it is new.

I have the same problem, i havn't found a real solution yet =/ What i do is put a fan near the laptop though (external fan) so it doesn't overheat.

You can buy cooling pads for under $50. It's basically a thing with fans on it that you set your laptop on. They work though.

yes but i dont think that if I spent quite alot on a supposedly very good laptop I should have to buy a cooling pad!

Use Game Booster program, if it does not change much, find a pro who will fix it.

Ok I'll try Gamebooster. On average, how many bots do you think a computer with this spec should be able to run simultaneously? Using RSBuddy or Powerbot, as I use both.

I had a problem similar to this with my previous laptop.

From what you describe, it sounds like there may be an issue with your laptops fan. If I were you I would check the back of your laptop to make sure all the vents are clear, especially around your graphics card.

If there is a problem with the fan, this can be quite serious as the heat can cause internal damage to your laptops processor and RAM. (My RAM actually melted :()

Those temperatures are fine, you shouldn't be worried. 65c isn't that hot, my i5 gets much hotter than that.

Surely if you have an i5, you should have a higher end cooling unit? :)

Don't really have much choice of what cooling unit is in a laptop sadly. But it's really not an issue since the max operating temperature is 105c. His i3-370M has a max temperature of either 105c or 90c, either way 65c is no cause for concern. It's hardly "overheating"

You can take it to a local shop and ask them for laptop cooling solutions (they're expensive, but exist). However, 65c, as Clash said, is not very hot for processors. I'd just make sure you turn your computer off when you don't use it and maybe have it checked for damage in a few months.

The only problem should be if you notice a sizeable change in functionality when it is hotter than usual. ;)

Could be a issue with the fan. I'd suggest a new fan or a laptop cooler, laptop coolers are like $10.
