Im from the UK and I can say first hand that car insurance prices are ridiculous. I have friends that are paying £8000 on insurance alone for a car that cost them like £1500. So sick.

I dont see how the UK government can expect people of ages 17-21 to be able to pay the huge prices.

So wait, you'd have to pay £12,000 for insurance for one year?

Where I live, you'd have to have been in like 2 accidents and drive a $50,000 car for that...

EDIT: what logical sense does it make having people pay insurance that's like 3x the cars worth? Completely idiotic

I know its absolutely crazy in my opinion. I really cant understand it. Also it can prevent people from doing things such as gap years, etc cause they cant afford it

I find this quite hard to beleive. Im 17 and from the UK, I passed my test 6 days ago. I now drive a brand new 11 plate 1.2 car, and the insurance for that was £6000 with me as the main driver, fully comp, the full sha-bang. The comparison websites do not quote online for offers over £7000 I have found. I didn't get a signle quote on many companies online. I had to ring up to find out the true sum. But it would have cost £16000 to get insured on my dads 3L bmw 61 plate, so £22000 for a 1.4 seems ridiculous.

As far as cheap insurance goes: Quinn (its an irish based company that specialises in young drivers) they are the best for insurance policies where you are the main driver and it is your policy. Im with them personally.

If you are being the name driver, and one of your parents etc being the main driver then Aviva is meant to be very good. One of my friends has a 1.9L golf for 1.3k a year doing it this way and he is 17.

Also things like co-op offer packages with boxes. They get fitted into your car and measure how fast you accelerate, number of people in the car etc, and what time you drive at. You also cannot drive between 11pm and 5am, not very practical but the insurance will be very cheap.

Also look at multi-car policies, co-op and admiral do good ones I have hear. where your parents car and your car get all tied into one policy, will lowers the cost of your insurance but raises your parents basically, (it will work out cheaper for a combined total)

EDIT: I passed with no minors! take that!

    22K is BS on a 1.4

I could have been insured on a 3.2L Porsche for 11k...

Btw, use LV, they are pretty cheap, 500 quid off if someone else is with them, my mate who's 17 has a 1.4 skoda with them for £2100

It will be average, probally about like £1000 for a £15000 car or something like that. It's only really the first year that costs a lot. I did a lot of quotes and me simply turning 18 or 19, having not owned a car, driven since the day I passed when 17, so no more experience lowered the cost by quite a lot.

It seems the UK are just shit scared of 17 year old male drivers. And to be honest I understand why, the way some of my friends drive is just stupid. Almost everyone I know has had a little scrape atleast.

Even with a 1.4 you shouldn't be paying £20,000! If you do a Pass+ course, it decreases your insurance quite alot too.

Funny thing is depending on the address you put the amount can change, at my address i have brought it down to 12k a year -.-

if i put in my aunties address it goes to 5.9k a year on insurance.

i was told to put another address they live somewhere else and that my insurance would be something like 1-2k :D

Just don't get insurance? If you pay more on insurance than the car is worth, you would be better off paying for a broken car once than paying for insurance every month and getting ripped off in the end

I don't have a clue where you live, but in Canada it's illegal to drive without insurance. You've got to factor in the fact if you get into an acccident with someone else without insurance you have to pay for their repairs and yours, and that can cost a TON depending on how much yours and then other guys can is worth.

Yeah so paying insurance means the insurance company deals with paying them and paying for your damages as well, and because of alot of people defrauding insurance companies the premium and the insurance costs of new drivers are higher so that the companies can make the money back.

Yep, for someone of age 17/18 who's recently passed their test the insurance prices are astronomical. I've got my test next month and I'm gonna be insured on my mum's citreon C1 until I get my own car. But yeah, especially for males the prices are crazy, but that's all getting changed I believe.

the problem with not having insurance at all,
is when you crash your $500 car into your neighbours new bmw, guess who has to pay? Sure you still have to pay a premium if you're insured but its no more than $1000 usually. If you don't care about the car at least get insured for when you hit someone.

my car is insured for a set price of 16k if its written off. And i pay 1.5k a year for insurance

For a Ten+ year old Polo in the UK, being 17, Fully comp your policy the MAX you should be paying is £5000, providing you live in a reasonable area. If you live in central London then obviously It's going to be more.

That's what you get for buying a stupid car. Try again with a KA or a Clio.
