They made a thread about it a while ago as I remember. If they ever did bring them back it would probably be as super rare treasure trail rewards. Don't think it would ruin the economy. Prices would stabilise over time, just like every other item.

Jagex stated themselves MANY times they didnt intend for partyhats to be hoarded, insanely valuable and did not think of the reprecussions at the time of making the items tradeable. Also, when rares were introduced, no one had anywhere remotely close to a max cash stack and at the time of the drop only a handful of players had a single, yes just a single 99. Think of it as a lucky mistake. At one point they considered removing rares, in a 2003 news post.

OT: I want my rares asap.

Sorry if i wasn't clear, but i didn't mean to say that that was Jagex's purpose for rares. I understand Jagex's initial intention and have read up on it before too.

Rares, however, are what you described as a lucky mistake which added on to the uniqueness of Runescape. Like you said, back then no one had anywhere remotely close to max cash stack.

I'm pretty sure that in time to come, yes eventually players will reach the max cash stack. But what hastened the process were Rares. Rares spurred players on to get more gp.

Without rares, why would there be a need for excessive amounts of GP? Since prices of items would only drop (unless of course, there is a huge influx of new players forever) and gp in game would only rise, rares are necessary to make up for the excess gp in the game and keep players that have already 'completed' the game to play on and work for more.

Exactly. To me a large part of Runescape is rares. I wouldn't go so far as to say rares define Runescape but they defiantly make up a huge part of the game. Releasing rares as extremely rare treasure trail rewards would be pointless. It defeats the purpose of rares. They just wouldn't be RARES anymore. I want a rare because they're RARE and I know no more are coming into the game. If they release them as treasure trail rewards I will be very annoyed tbh. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens. I'm crossing my fingers hoping for the best.
