Green Bar SSL.

Do I have to own a business to obtain greenbar SSL for a website? I'm currently coding my own, but was curious what the process is to get the greenbar. It already has an SSL, but I want users to know it is a legit, secure site. My understanding is that you have to own a legit business to obtain one, but does anyone know for sure? Thanks.

 

Anyone can get one but it cost a good amount of money. You need a certifying authority (CA) to certify say that it's your website. Without this the user can't be sure it's your website, it could be another website claiming to be yours. There's only a few trusted companies that do this like Symantec and GoDaddy.

No you don't need a business. You'll probably have to provide a buisness name but it doesn't have to be official. For extended validation ssl certs you would likely need to be a registered business that can prove theyre legitimate. Both are the green bar. When you connect to an ssl site the cerifying authority vouches that your hostname and certificate has been registered with them. The certifying authority isnt vefirying your website is good. Your website could still install malware or sell customer info. The extended verification ssl goes into this but not the basic one.
