Hi, im interested in creating a online text based game (MMORPG) and i have downloaded php and mysql... the sad part is i have no knowledge whats so ever... i can't even figure out how to start ;) i have a few basic game ideas and i want to start testing without actually paying for a website. If anyone had some guide sites or just some tips it would be nice :D thanx.

You could start by reading books on this subject, like I did at the beginning. After you gain some knowledge you can read other people's work, you can find a lot of opensource scripts on the internet. Then I advice you to read other peoples MMORPG source code (if you're allowed to => opensource) and then you can start thinking about your own version :)

Reading books doesn't help much. I find it pretty annoying.

Do what I did, I learned from internet tutorials. Books are only good if you're on the run, or always busy.

Learn php first, then learn how to make sql queries within your databases, then It's not too hard from there on.

I made a php mmorpg script a long time ago, it had levels, experience points, attack, inventory, that kinda stuff. I'll let you know if I find it.

Books are alright, sometimes it's just frustrating trying to figure out what something means, or not enough detail. Thanx for posting u guys. Also, if you know where any free books or tutorials are, feel free to post em here :)

You can start by going to the library ;), if you don't mind to read eBooks then I can help you with that. I have a lot of programming eBooks.

I also prefer online resources because you can easily switch between your testing thing and the help source, so it's less frustrating, and easier to work with.

the best thing to do would be to devote 30 mins every day to learning coding and thelike

Thanx Guys :) :D

I think books are better than internet guides.. In some parts. Its easier to just read a book than read from web (u get distracted easily) and the tuts can be kinda messy.. But u can learn more from web, and by just looking at other peoples source codes u can learn alot.

good luck =)

Books ARE better because you can't just copy and paste source.. You have to actually learn something to make the program work... I vote for books =D
