"one or more of your computers may be infected with a bot"

Ok, so today I recieved an email from my internet service provider (Comcast) and the email said:

    Dear XFINITY Customer,

Constant Guard from XFINITY identified one or more of your computers may be infected with a bot. A bot is a malicious form of software that is used to send spam, host a phishing site, or steal your identity by monitoring your keystrokes without your knowledge. It may be possible you are unaware that your computer is infected with a bot.

We strongly recommend that you visit XFINITY.com/BotAssistance for important information on how to remove malicious software from your computer(s).

We appreciate your prompt attention to this important security notice.

    Sincerely,

    Constant Guard from XFINITY

Now my questions are: 1) Are they just trying to get me to try and download this "Free" Norton thing? 2) Is this just a spam email? 3) Does anyone know an actually FREE program i can use to check if my computer has been infected--and not one those scanners that say its free but when its done you have to pay to see the results?

    Thanks!

    Norton Anti-virus is really good.

Also, are you able to screeny the email and add it to the OP so we can better judge its legitimacy?

Yeah I'd say from the looks of it, its not true. I've never heard of any of this Constant Guard crap, you should be fine. If you want to be on the safe side, run a virus scan with your chosen anti-virus.

I'm surprised he even listened to you after the first sentence. Norton is absolute shit, get malware bytes and run a scan to see if your infected and use Avast as your anti-virus program for runtime protection.

Norton is fucking terrible (pardon my French), I'm sorry but it's not even in the top #10 anymore out of all the Anti-viruses out there. Something like Kaspersky is much more efficient and overall better for a decent Anti-virus program.

It does sound like a spam email, did you check if it was from your ISP themselves? If you're unsure, you may want to just call them up to check.

And if you want something free and decent for checking for any malicious software on your PC, just get Malwarebytes.

Thanks for the input. Turns out that it was just a spam email and my computer is clean. Yeah, I'm not using Norton again and Malwarebytes was absolutely fabulous.
