This would probably be better if it were sliced differently. I don't like that your buttons extend all the way to the left.

Meh, the 2nd one is better than the first but there's too much black space. Also why did you use the 3 instead of an "e"? o.o

 

I agree, the second one is much more aesthetically pleasing.
-However, i advise you replace the dark brown background with a transparent layer.

 

It would look more appealing if you made some sort of buttons, so it would advertise the links more. You can make some by using the marquee tool, or the rounded rectangular tool, and experiment with some blending using Blending Options.
