    Chargebacks vs. Merchants

Correct me if I'm wrong, but sending a "payment" on PayPal via the Gifting option to friends and family is 100% chargeback proof. I'm pretty sure because it is considered a gift, it can neither be returned nor disputedvto the sender.

So why are merchants so anal about using PayPal with questionable users? Just ask them to send money as a gift.

Nope, paypal is just the middleman. Chargebacks are done by contacting your bank or credit/debit card company and telling them something went wrong or you didn't get what you paid for. Paypal will only fight chargebacks if the goods are tangible and aren't done through gifting.

Gift payments are no more secure than goods payments.

All you have to do is call PayPal and say you value them as a business partner and that you didnt authorize that charge.

    POOF. Money = refunded.

If anything it's easier to dispute a gift because:

    A. Like you said, it's just a gift, paypal's not going to spend a whole lot of time investigating if someone wanted their "gift" money back
    B. No one pays a fee on gifts, further discouraging Paypal from spending time looking into it
