Don't bother with VB either ^^.

Look into java by Sun Microsystems. A simple google search can help get you started.

    C# Tutorial

I can provide several reasons why you're a noob here and now simply by that one post. Someone I know recommends Assembly to all beginners, because if you can't debug, you can't exactly make profitable software. I recommend a C based language - preferrably C/C++ - Because they live up to their reputation, and flow a lot more than any other language in terms of both program execution and coding style. They also give a good idea of "how everything ticks", which you need to know if you even want to have anything to do with computers other than using a word processor or image manipulation program.

speedster - C# and Java are unbelievably similar. When I started to use C# for XNA some time back, I already knew Java, and I pretty much just tossed my ebook in to the trash because I did not need to re-read any common knowledge. It does not matter out of either language you learn (unless you plan for cross-platform development), because the only thing you need to get use to is the varying classes and maybe slightly different keywords and coding structure.
