They have updated it. If you leave before they hit the ground, and get the penalty box the loot is gone forever. You can still go and bank for stuff and come back if the loot has appeard.

This is OUTDATED. There is no way to do this, your safest bet is after you kill someone, have a friend defense punch you for the penalty so you cannot be attacked except by your target if s/he happens to come.

It's fixed , however it's worth to do anyway , i always try to leave in order to take torags / karils +brews and stuff , since pjers and penalty hunters are off the hook these days :S

Ok well im sure you guys know this but i didnt for a while, at bounty hunter if you kill someone and while their falling if you leave the crater in time and go back ur kill will be there with no pen just wanted to put here if you guys didnt know =]

the only problem with this is that you need to run back ASAP, if you dont make it, you would be damn well gutted.
