First time trying a smudge like this. Tell me what you think.

Smudges are way too sharp and random, there is no depth, and while I do enjoy the colors I feel there could be more tonal variation and definitely substantively better lighting.

    EDIT:

Although I do agree the smudges are too sharp (I went back and fixed that the best I could), I'm not sure about the rest. There are definitely some of the smudges that are going off places, but I think the majority are going with the flow. There is no depth because I don't see how I could in a smudge tag, please correct me if I'm wrong, but I do also believe that render blends in with the background while also standing out. Also not many other colors I could have used, other than white and brown, so I apologize for that. And I had to add my own light source for the lighting, which may not be the best but there's nothing much else I can do. I dodged/burned all of the places that I thought needed to be brighter and darker, so if you could tell me how to improve the lighting that would be appreciated.

Sorry for the long reply, I wanted to answer everything, and thanks for your CnC.

    No flow/direction

Your edit is much better than your original piece. Your smudges are decent, but you should keep in mind that it needs to have direction otherwise it makes the piece look stagnant.

Really nice color variation and I really like this one. Is that from Borderlands?
