Is this for personal knowledge or getting ahead and knowledge so you can do well in a Java class?

Do you mean Java or JavaScript? You don't need to know Java if you want to build a community forum, you almost don't need to know any coding if you want to just build a forum, and not go advanced in it.

Seems like you are confusing java with another language used to create websites. If you are seeking java help, feel free to contact me on Skype:

If I'm correct, you'll be working with a lot of client side and apache software programming, as well as front-end programming for the visuals. You will need to know things like C#, C, Bash, HTML/CSS, and javascript/JSON/JQUERY to be a competent forum programmer.

Pretty much what Mohtasha said, you can also do graphic design like Photoshop CS6. Or, you can use free software like www.zetaboards.com and not know much, and learn slow.

I really don't have time otherwise I would. I'm working on creating my own forum for the disney college program interns so we don't have to use the shitty facebook group page. 4000+ people on a single FB page is just a giant cluster fuck lol. Plus, I only know HTML/CSS and javascript, I don't know anything about MySQL or C# or anything like that

If you have specific questions, post them here and I or another user will be happy to answer though

Start with looking into HTML5 so you can actually build a website. Once you understand the basics you can look into CSS3 to style your website.

After you know how to create a decent looking website you can use Javascript to handle events. Try using pure Javascript at first and once you know how it works you can use jQuery to make life a lot easier..

But if you actually want to create a forum you will also need to store and receive the data. Look into SQL and PHP to get that done.

You can also use other languages if you want to. But the route mentioned above is probably the easiest. The most annoying part about web development is getting it to work well on all kind of different browsers and devices.
