    Turn Off and Restart.

    Hey,

I recently reformatted my PC, twice.

At first the Turn Off and Restart buttons worked fine, until about a day later they suddenly stopped working.

What I mean by the Turn Off and Restart buttons:

I try clicking it multiple times yet nothing happens.

Which resorts me into forcing a shut down by holding down the power button on the tower or by pressing the restart button on the tower if I need to restart.

I'm running Windows XP Professional SP2.

The commands are in system32, which I have also tried shutting down through there, yet the command box appears as a flash when I double click it and still nothing happens.

If anyone could assist me in fixing this, that would be great.

    Thanks in advance.

PS: If you need any other relevant information, don't hesitate to ask.

    Turn Off and Restart.

Reinstall your OS and see if that fixes it.

    Turn Off and Restart.

Try to update your Windows, including updating to Service Pack 3.

okay.. Yeah obviously reinstalling windows would fix it.

Are you trying to shut it down while you have programs running or active processes? Normally windows would shut them down, but other time it will wait until they respond. If it doesn't respond, you could be in the situation you're in now.. Another thing to try would be to just click it normally and wait. leave your computer or something for an hour or two. This will help see if it really isn't working or if it's just being slow.

That's just sorta for diagnosing the problem though.

I would reinstall it, but I'm hoping to try avoiding that method.

If I am resorted into using that as my last option, then I will.

However I would prefer not to reinstall it at this time unless I can find an alternative fix.

    I'll look into that.

    Obviously it would.

I have tried shutting down while there were programs running and while there weren't programs running.

However as you suggested, next time I will wait an hour to see what happens, however being slow should not be the problem as I've lowered all the terminating time in the Registry Editor.

    Thanks for the suggestions.

    Neutral.

    Nothing happened.

Which is why I'm still requiring assistance on this issue. :\

I've checked my Power Options in Control Panel and every settings is correct.

So I have no idea what the problem could be..

    Turn Off and Restart.

If you haven't reinstalled already, have you tried a system restore to when the buttons were working? Either way, it sounds like something happened during installation.

Sounds like your installation was corrupt. Only thing I could think of is reinstall your OS. Goodluck.
