Need to learn a new language, need thoughts.

Hello. I'm aware that this has been probably asked dozen of times, but I'll give a try.

So basically, i'm looking for a new language to learn. Atm I have 4 years of experience with VB.net (still need to improve, but I know how to work with it) and I've worked a bit with PHP (still have ALOT of things to learn, but I know the basics). So now i'm looking for something new to learn, and I don't know where to start.

What language do you guys recommend ? Java or C++ seems to be a good choice but as the title say's, I need thoughts.

    Thanks in advance !

When I clicked on this thread I thought you where going to be asking about language, as in spoken language.

I'm shit at computers, I know nothing about them but I can tell you that I have a few friends that have been trying to teach themselves C++ because apparently it comes in handy for a lot of things.

It depends what you want to do. If you want to make phone applications, learn the languages required to do that. If you want to do other stuff, learn the languages required to do that other stuff.

Yeah C++ isn't bad from what i've heard but I think I need to learn C before C++ (not sure if true, will get more infos)

I want to learn languages for learning purpose. That's what I want to study and knowing few languages would give me a serious advantages, especially if i'm planning to go in university.

VB.net was enough to make what I wanted. I didn't really worked on "big" projects.

Anyway my first choice would be Java, but i'd like few more thought if possible ! Thanks :)

If it is for the sake of having an advantage when you get to university, java is probably the way to go. I major in computer science and java was the first mandatory class we had to take.

Lol exactly what my old classmates said. Not sure if I'll go to university (money problem), but it's always a bonus to know another language.

Thank you very much KMJT (and chloecat ofc), i'll give a try with Java ;)

Different languages have their own set of strengths and weaknesses. You haven't really told us what your desired projects are, so it makes it a little difficult to point you in the right direction. However, I highly recommend Java. It'll be used frequently in your Computer Science course and it's an easy transition to cpp if you wish to cross over later on.

Stay away from vb.net and explore what's out there. My personal fetish is Ruby and that's a ball of fun too. It's preference.

No, you do not need to learn C before C++. C++ is essentially "C with Classes." You can learn C++ without any prior C knowledge. Also, if you're a beginner programmer. I would suggest learning Python. its syntax is incredibly easy to learn, and it hammers in good coding indentation and layout very early on. Java,C++ will be much easier afterwards.
