Hey, I've realized my computer has been running slow and I was thinking of cleaning up heaps of things. Do you have any tips to improve performance and to keep your computer virus free?

Well the best defense against infection of any kind is common sense. Other than that, a decent antivirus program would be your best option. I use Norton because I get it free with Comcast. I hear Avira is a good free one. So is AVG. You could try a firewall like Comodo.

Performance wise, just do a defrag every once in a while. Download CCleaner from the Piriform website and run that to de-gunk your computer. You can also edit what runs on startup using CCleaner for a faster boot. There is also a registry cleaner included that I have never had problems with.

Open task manager and kill some processes you're not using. But be careful which ones you use.

    etc etc..

Use an antivirus, or an internet security program which would be preferred. Use a popup blocker and a adblocker in your browser.

I know, I know. I always get crap for it. Truth is, I don't even need it. An occasional scan with Malwarebytes does the trick for me.

Malwarebytes is by far one of the best AVs out there. Download that and also run the Windows cleanup wizard. That should improve the performance quite a bit.

To anyone suggesting norton, it's shit, pure complete shit.

Microsoft Security Essentials is one of the best free ones tbh.

And malware bytes is good but only really when you have viruses.

I honestly can't believe you just rated Norton higher than nod32.. Nod32 all the way.

This is similar to what I said earlier, but for some reason my post was deleted?

Norton is better in my opinion, had it for years and never had any problems.

    Shits fucked Rawr.

Norton is the shittest AV software out there.
I had a paid sub for it just 6months ago, scanned regularly etc, ran one scan of mse and found 400viruses.
you tell me that it isnt shit. personal experience.
