Ok, so usually talking to people isn't that hard but WHAT we talk about is something else completely.

Just now, a girl who is a friend of my roommate came in, I was super nice but then I started joking about rape because she brought it up, and of course I could tell she got uncomfortable and soon left. This has been happening lately with most people, and it's because I can't relate to anyones sense of humour which leads me to not talk as much which then leads people to think I'm an antisocial asshole.

So should I continue to try and pretend to like the conversation or just keep trying to find people who I relate to and can have fun conversations with?

I think that you should just be yourself, and try to find people who you can relate to. Because if you want to end up getting into a relationship with that person, you don't want someone who you can't have fun with and talk to, regularly. I'm probably not the best person to get advice from, as I am having my own problems with a girl at the moment, but I hope it helps out. Good luck.

Just a thought : But you should reply back whenever you can either relate or benefit to whatever the question or the topic maybe.
Or risk seeming like an asshole with whatever remarks it is that you've been saying lately.

If you want to practice social interaction with people try one of these suggestions:

If you enjoy competitive gaming of ANY sorts. I suggest going to gaming centers, competitions, or conventions.. That's a good way to interact with other people and at least get some social interactions. It's a decent start.

Clubs aren't generally the BEST way to socially interact but, it's an alright way.. Not sure if you're old enough though.

As for just general conversations like for example the girl you were talking to.
Just be yourself and try to relax.

I think you should take her to sporting events, concerts, movies etc...
Talk about life, talk about what you want to do in the future, how will you achieve it, why you want it, why do you like each other, make silly remarks/jokes, but don't make it sound or look at any bit serious, have some fun, tickle her etc...

Many ways to get a conversation started, sometimes just by exchanging funny/jokingly remarks at each other.

I was in the same boat as you not long ago, I'm a very sarcastic person and it apparently came off as insulting to the people who didn't know me properly.
I only found out because my friends were saying such and such says you think they're dumb or what ever. I didn't, it was just my sense of humour.

I had to try hard to give up on the sarcastic comments, obviously I still let a few slip, but not as much.
Anyway... Try taking a short while to think about what you're going to say, then once they know you properly you can do what you like. :)
Or just try changing the subject when potentially awkward subjects pop up.

Try and take interest in other people's lives. Ask them questions about themselves and direct conversations towards their interests. Humour is good too, but of course try to keep it PG-13 unless you are quite close with them.

Do not talk about raping, fucking and other not nice things when you are joking and you will be okay.

You are in the sayy mode of talking to people due to talking to friends online like sythe, yeah most of us would understand the humour behind it, it's more of a guy thing real close frind kind of guy talk. Always play it slow with new people learn slowly there bounderies and you will realise how far you can go with certain topics with certain people :) just takes time :(
