    Political Cartoon Question

    Left = JFK
    Right = Kruschchev (however you spell it)

    The cold war was extremely volatile times, with strained tensions between the USSR and USA. Because of the conflicts between these two, multiple incidents came about such as the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Space Race. As a result, the Doomsday Clock was created to measure how close the world was to ending because of the possibility of a nuclear crisis. It became out of control, as USA and the USSR each strived to increase their offensive capabilities. The closest the clock ever got to 12:00 (catastrophic events) was 11:58, when the USSR and USA each tested the world's first ThermoNuclear bombs. So would it be optimistic to believe that they could actually control the situation, given how far it has gotten out of hand?

    Political Cartoon Question

    Dragon is correct, but I'd like to add a couple of points to him:

    After the Cuban Missile Crisis, a hotline was added that connected the White House DIRECTLY to Moscow to avert future disaster. Other movies, like the Atomic Cafe, were later released to show just how close the world came to the brink of destruction.

    The comic reflects the view EVERYONE shared at the time: Both leaders need to come together, otherwise we will destroy the world 100 times over. The doomsday clock and things like that were created partially in protest, and partially as a warning, that nuclear war would be the end of the world as we know it.

    The times were full of fear, but the people all shared the same hope: no nuclear war.
