    Alienware.

    Hey everyone!

I've been looking around to buy a new computer, preferably laptop. I was thinking Toshiba or HP, but then I was told about Alienware by some friends of mine. So then today I went to their website and customized a laptop, I beleive it was their new M17. Total cost came out to be $3,600 (Canadian).

    The Basic Specs
Intel quad core processor (like 2.6GHz)
    4GP RAM
    Duel 512MB video card
    320GB harddrive

So what I'm asking is if its really worth putting all of that money into a computer like that. Ofcourse its good, but what about in a few years from now?

    Post what you think.

Don't listen to people to poor to buy one, I have an ALX X58, and it's the best thing I've ever purchased. Before alienware I went through computers every year, Alienware = long lasting, great performance, never lets you down. :p

If your getting a new computer, alienware is the way to go.

Absolutely not worth it. Order the parts seperately and pay a computer-literate friend $200 to put them together. It'll probably cost less than half.

A little bit of an explanation would help a little bit.

I've had my desktop for 3 years now, and its been problem after problem. To begin with, the RAM is garbage and I have just never updated it. But now I want to go over to friends houses and game, but I can drag this piece of shit around with me all over the place :p. And, it won't run alot of games. I'm surprised it will run Runescape HD, but lags pretty badly.

    Order the Alienware parts?

well ill give you my opinion.

If you really want a laptop and you obviously have intentions of doing some high performance stuff (gaming probally) the alienware over priced but the main advantage of these laptops is that they are the few laptops where the graphics card is not integrated. They are easier to customize with hardware unlike other laptops. I suspect in a few years time laptops will become more customized and nothing everything will be integrated in the motherboard. If you need it right now, then best bet is to get the mx17 with best processor and ports you want. Then add the graphics card, ram, and hd. Laptop parts are way more than regular desktop but if you must get it then do what i said. But like every computer, they are easily outdated in 3-5 years, so spend the money how ever you like cuz its yours.

Ignorant statement, if you know anything about computer's and the company's that build them you would understand.

    1) All computer's are built with the same materials EXCEPT alienware, that is a proven fact.

    2) Alienware computer's are not made with recycled computer part's.

    3) Alienware's speed is the best then anyother computer's out there.

In my opinion, buy a desktop. I thought I would constantly be using the mobility offered by a laptop but in reality, am not.

Oh really? Hmm, would you care to explain why after looking through their computers I saw the words "INTEL" on their motherboards and processors and nVidia chips?

Ok? If you buy your own parts they are not recycled either and if they were they would have the word "refurbished" or they would be on par with brand new parts in quality.

Speed? What kind of speed? Processor speed, what? Their graphics cards certainly are not the best, all I see is dual 280s. What about tri or quad 295s? Their processor I can match, and their ram I can match. All for cheaper prices.

    Oh and
    Source?

Read the topic genius, Alienware is the best speed for Game Play.

All computer company's use "RECYCLED" part's not refurbished, I don't expect a boy in 6th grade to understand that yet, so I'm not going to flame you.

3rd, Google is your best friend. Search it to see the difference between every computer and alienware.

You don't seem to understand that those are consumer reports for computers made by companies. You can custom build a computer using the same parts for less. Until you show that Alienware uses different parts than everyone else, I will have to believe that they use the same because I seriously doubt they manufacture parts. Working on that computer by the way, get right back to you with it when I'm done.

Edit: Alienware charges 6,500 dollars for their top of the line gaming computer which runs dual 280s. I just got the parts together for a computer running same mobo/proccesor/ram and 4 gtx 295s for around 5000.

    True.

    Their parts are the same.

    I'm thinking about doing that.

Sure their ratings are half decent, but that doesnt mean that the ratings were all put there by people who think their computers are good, and acctually own one.

I'm not the kind of person that knows too much about building computers. I'm probably just going to get the parts and get someone to put it together for me.

For all the people insulting you, they have no idea what there talking about. I don't think they understood this is a laptop not many people build them, nor is it really worth it. Whoever said google it is a moron, you can't google "best gaming computer" and expect to get an unbiased and accurate opinion.

That alienware computer is beastly and top of the line, but you can find another computer similar in performance for much less. Unless you really have your heart set on the alienware and money isn't a big issue to you then get it.

    Here's a good alternative for 1.15k USD
    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9172511&type=product&id=1218043606827

    2.26GHz Dual Core
    320GB HDD
    4GB DDR3
    NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GTS - 1GB GDDR3

It should have no trouble playing any of your games or doing anything else really. It's very similar to the alienware computer minus the quad core but this computer has a nice processor.

$3,000 for those specs on a laptop isn't worth it at all. Your paying for a name and a look, sure it looks nice on the outside but your virtually paying upwards of $1,000 for the case. For example if you were to build a desktop on your own, you could get 12gb of ram, i7 extreme processor($1,000 processor) over a terabyte worth of hd space and so on for around the same price as that laptop.

Go to places like CyberPowerPC.com where they build custom computers to your specs at a very low price. They even sell gaming notebooks that have similar specs but are $2000 less then Alienware...
