Rule on counter-scamming?

I was just wondering whats the rule on counter scamming, like if you got scammed for 100m, can you get banned then for scamming back 100m?

 

Create a scam report in the Report a Scammer section with all of the necessary proof to get the member banned. After that has been confirmed by the staff, you are then entitled to get back what you lost. Best check with the staff in the report to ensure everything is all clear. I.e. if someone charges back on an account sale, make sure you can recover the account back.

 

As far as i know, you can scam the person who scammed you only to recover goods that were stolen from you.

Best to get staff's opinion though, don't want you to get banned for scamming.

 

I would suggest getting a global mod involved before you do anything.

 

Actually a pretty good question, but I don't think so. You'll have to report them and once they're banned, they'll have to pay you back in order to be unbanned from Sythe.

 

If you were scammed 100m by someone, and you or someone else are given a chance to retrieve said 100m from said scammer, you are allowed to do this. You are not allowed to take more than what has been scammed from you or others. Generally it's a good idea to notify a staff member that you plan on counterscamming someone but on a thread a few months back, a staff member stated that you don't technically need to. Even if you weren't scammed by someone, if you have the opportunity to retrieve money from a scammer who has outstanding debts either here or offsite, I believe you are allowed to hold their money, however i'm fairly sure this isn't suggested and is usually best done mainly by staff members. It's best to stay out of any sort of counterscamming/attempts unless it involves you directly, and like I said better to notify a staff member than not.

 

I believe the last time this happened MEP counter scammed Nick (cb). Nick scammed a blue party hat when he was a ddyce rank. TTB and Xeiro repaid the debt. Several years later MEP was asked to create a website for Nick. Something made MEP think he had heard about the guy in the past. When he did a little research he realized it was cb the ddyce general rank who scammed. MEP went ahead and accepted $500.00 for the website. He quickly notified TTB and Xeiro and i think split it between them. This is the last occasion i can remember when someone was counter scammed for a decent amount.

(This happened awhile ago and all i can remember personally. I may have mixed up some details or left parts out.)

 

Get permission from staff, if u clear it first, its legal.

Simple as that.

 

Legal refers to the justice system, which has nothing to do with scamming/banning.

Also, you can only counter-scam up to how much you were scammed for.

 

It would be nice to have a definitive ruling on what exactly is required in order to be able to counterscam, as waiting for a decision made in Upper Staff generally takes some time - and thereby voiding the opportunity if the scammer wants to sell gold for example.

 

The definition of the word can change based on the context of its use. He used the word correctly.
