    Computer upgrading questions

n4n0 has been a god and has been helping me build my new computer which I'm buying the parts for in about a week or so. This is what he recommended and I will most likely be getting what he recommended. This is what he sent me: PCPartPicker. He told me about overclocking and for someone who spends 95% of their life on a computer I had very little information on what overclocking was. I somewhat know what it is now and he told me if I wanted to overclock to get the i7-4790k. I was thinking on it, but then I was on Amazon and saw the i7-6700k. It's a bit cheaper and it seems to run better than the 4790k.

Now I'm not the most intelligent when it comes to computers, but would the motherboard n4n0 sent me work with the i7-6700k? Also would I need to get DDR4 RAM? And I have a 600W power supply, so should I upgrade that as well? If so what would you recommend? I asked n4n0 but I assume he's busy and it's not his fault, that's why I'm asking here.

I will also be getting the Corsair H100i v2: https://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Extr...&ie=UTF8&qid=1475908706&sr=1-1&keywords=h100i unless I should get a different version.

TL;DR: i7-4790k or i7-6700k and does the i7-6700k work with the motherboard n4n0 sent me? DDR4 RAM with the i7-6700k or no? 600W Power supply upgrade yes or no? Corsair H100i v2 or different version?

If I forgot anything I'll edit it. Thanks for anyone who takes the time to read everything and to the people who read the TL;DR cause you decided to read through my shitty typing :D.

Edit: Is there a different motherboard/RAM I should get or is the one n4n0 sent good? He sent this as I sent him a $500 budget but I have a bit more to use. If the i7-4790K is better then I'll just get what he recommended.

Sorry bud, I actually meant to reply to your PM.

The 6700k is the better buy, especially if it's cheaper, but it will not work with the mobo I initially gave you.

Actually.. After a little research... Looks like the 4790k might be the stronger chip.... But it's a close call judging from the benchmarks I'm looking at. They're pretty close.

No problem :p, everyone has stuff they have to do. And yeah they are close that's why I'm so conflicted. If I were to wind up getting the i7-6700k the setup would be:
    Mobo: https://www.amazon.com/Gigabyte-LGA...c&ie=UTF8&qid=1475917916&sr=1-1&keywords=z170
    Power Supply: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B...47_6?ie=UTF8&refRID=CEMZCGE4HEAZHNW214RQ&th=1
    RAM: https://www.amazon.com/2133MHz-Non-...ive_browse-bin:677429011,p_85:2470955011&th=1 I'd get 2 of these.

Any opinions on this build? The power supply was just something added in there because I should upgrade mine just in case :p. People are saying that the mobo arrived dead or defective and that the customer support is awful. That worries me but I'm looking for second opinions.

If I don't get the 6700k, I'll buy everything you already recommended and also add the power supply.

Looks solid, but from what I'm reading, DDR4 performance over DDR3L is extremely miniscule for gaming, the most noticeable gain is with integrated gfx

The Intel 6th Gen Skylake Review: Core i7-6700K and i5-6600K Tested

You may be able to save a little cash picking up a mobo that supports DDR3 and some DDR3 RAM.

Thanks for the info, I looked up DDR3L and it seemed to be a ton of Laptop RAM. Apparently just DDR3 will inevitably damage the processor according to this article: Intel Reminds: Skylake Processors Do Not Officially Support DDR3 RAM, Use Could Damage the IMC - Only DDR3L and DDR4 Supported

I found 1 mobo to support DDR3/DDR3L that also supports 6th gen processors. I don't know where to find reliable non-laptop DDR3L though. I think going with DDR4 would overall be easier but I could be wrong. Also I'm also looking at this RAM: https://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Veng...c&ie=UTF8&qid=1475924031&sr=1-3&keywords=DDR4 as it's 3200MHz C16 which is supposedly better than the RAM I put above. At the same time I feel like trying to overclock RAM will confuse me more than it should XD. Opinion on it?

Whichever route you go, just make sure you do the research and make an educated decision man. I can help out as much as possible but I recommend you educate yourself as much as possible. Google is a great tool and will open up a wealth of information to you, it just takes a bit of time to actually wade through it all.

    Computer upgrading questions

I've done my research and I'm going with the i7-6700K build most likely. I'm just stuck between 2 motherboards. The first being the Asus Z170-A ATX: https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-Z170-A-...ie=UTF8&qid=1448997740&sr=8-1&keywords=Z170-A and the other being the Gigabyte GA-Z170X-Gaming 3: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B012N6E996/ref=ox_sc_act_title_8?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER. Why I'm stuck mostly is because the fact that Asus has, from what I've seen, such a user friendly BIOS for overclocking. What I mean by that is, is that there is a button I can hit to basically tell the motherboard what I plan on using my computer for and it'll set it's own overclock which I find very nice. I can't find any videos on the BIOS of the Gigabyte motherboard. It also seems that the Gigabyte motherboard has better rating than the Asus and the Asus would take longer to ship. I'm leaning towards Gigabyte. but I'm reluctant because it's my first time overclocking and I don't know how "noob" friendly it is. The RAM I'm probably going to get something around 2400MHz or just stay with the 2133MHz as I posted early. I'm looking for a second opinion on these motherboards, if you or anyone else can give me their opinion I'll appreciate it and take it into consideration. Also I really do appreciate the help!

I personally would advise against using the "one click" overclocking. The settings the system uses aren't all that intuitive, and ultimately could end up giving you a bad overclock. It's best to learn how to do it manually or just not do it at all.

There are tons of overclock guides put there and I can almost guarantee if you look you could even find a guide specifically for your MOBO/CPU combination.

Oh okay, thank you. I'm going to go with the Gigabyte mobo then. I'll look up guides and slowly teach myself and learn. I really appreciate all the things you've done to help me! :D.

    The final build will be:
    Mobo: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B012N6E996/ref=ox_sc_act_title_3?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER
    CPU/Cooling: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01D4C5JVK/ref=ox_sc_act_title_6?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER
RAM (I might change, probably not though): https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00TY6A1P0/ref=ox_sc_act_title_11?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER
    Power Supply: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B017HA3RGE/ref=ox_sc_act_title_12?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER
    SSD: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00OBRE5UE/ref=ox_sc_act_title_5?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

    Thanks again :D

A switch to the 6700k will allow you to use the newest 1151 chipset and also allow you to use ddr4 opposed to ddr3 ram. Either cpu would be fine and if you factor in overclocking, they'll both last quite a while; however, why not go for an I5 6600k? If you're not doing video editing and other CPU intensive processes, an I7 is overkill when you still easily overlock an i5 6600 to 4.5+ ghz.

I would say go for the newest chipset and go for an 6600k opposed to the 6700. It'll knock a solid $150+ off your build that you can move to other areas (i.e. a graphics card). Don't get a M.2 ssd unless you can afford it, the ssd you selected will do just fine and I myself have two 480gb PNY SSD's and they work wonderfully. Also, I didn't look at your mobo all that in-depth, but if it doesn't have wireless networking you're going to need to buy a wireless card (bluetooth combined wouldn't hurt).

The PSU is fine unless you plan on running crossfire/sli and if you want to run two GPU's, I'd suggest a little bit more overhead.

Thank you for all the info. I've looked at both the i5-6600k and the i7-6700k benchmarks and they are really close. I was thinking about just going with the i5-6600k after I saw that but then I thought about how I would like to make videos and do things like that. So I did in the end decide to get the i7. It would have helped a lot if I was going for a new GPU but I'm happy with my GTX 970 :p. Also I'm not going to get any SSD at this time. I'm going to worry about it for the future. I've looked up guides on how to get my windows onto there and I would need to buy another external to get everything off of my main harddrive to then get my windows onto the SSD. It doesn't look hard but I'm just gonna not try to put all my eggs into one basket just yet. Once I get the computer up and running and it works perfectly then I'll worry about fine tuning things. Thank you for the information. It was very helpful :).

You're right, but I'm going to hold off on the SSD for now. I'll get one in the near future. Thank you though, I will keep this in mind for sure. :)
