Need Game Programming Ideas

Hey Sythe users,

I'm currently in Grade 11 Computer Science, which involves just programming. I was thinking about creating a 2D game (maybe 3D) with some kind of a game engine for my ISU/Final Project. I'd like some ideas for the game concept, as well as a suggested engine to use for this.

The language I will be using is either C or C++, but will take suggestions for Java or other programming language if there is enough information on it.

Since noone has actually suggested anything I personally would go with some kind of strategy game. Graphics wise you haven't got to be very skilled to make a good looking strategy game and depending on how you plan on making the game(ie browser based, etc) then java would be a good idea. As far as ideas for the actual game, if I could be bothered to plan I'd do it myself so just look around same goes for game engine^^

 

You may want to look into a case study in java called grid world. A simple google search should help you find it. With grid world it is easy to make certain
mini-games such as maybe a zelda or mario type game. Also good luck with your class as I am also in computer science this year.

 

Might I suggest a tower defense game made in C++. They show lots of good concepts like path-finding, dynamic arrays (for towers and enemies) and stuff. I made one for an assignment for uni just using basic shapes in SFML.

Some good 2D engines are SFML or SDL. They have lots of tutorials and are supported by Visual Studio 2005/2008/2010, and lots of other compilers. 3D games are a lot more difficult to code than 2D games.

Also, if you're Australian there is a competition called SwinGame which supplies a 2D engine. But I'm not sure if it still runs. The prize used to be $2,000 when I was in highschool.

I like the idea of a Tower Defence game, just need to tweak it so it would still be considered a "unique" game. SwinGame still runs the competition by the looks of it, and the engine itself looks quite good. I'm going to download it and test it out.

EDIT: Looked into the java "grid world" but it didn't really look like something for me. I might also think about a top-down RPG style like mario/zelda

 

Generally I would suggest a flash game for this type of project to save you the effort of programming the shapes, but personally I would do something along the lines of Icy Tower / other arcade games or a shitty FPS
