Creating a private server - help

Hi, I'm very new at all of this, and I've always wanted to make my own server, so I started trying. I have everything I should need, JDK, no-ip, etc. and I've done just about everything I think I need to do. But there are some things I'm not sure about.

1. The, 'the path cannot be specified' problem. I added classpath and path from a guide on here, but it didn't work I guess. I'm using JDK 6u4, if that makes a difference.
2. Promoting people. I got a clean source off of here that looked good, and since I haven't been able to access the server, I can't really promote myself. So this isn't that big of an issue yet.. But I can't figure out where I'll go to promote people once people play it.
3. COMPILER! The guide I used really slacked here, and I'm not sure what to do. It said to create a new notepad in the 'folder'.. Not specifying where, and it gave me the code, it, to no surprise, failed.
4.Once I have all this fixed, how do I go from having the source, and the no-ip to making it my server? I just don't really understand. How am I supposed to incorporate all of the files onto the server, once I get it running?

BTW - the source came with a client, if that helps you.

Hello. Could you give a screenshot? That would help us. A screenshot of your environment settings and the result when you try to compile.

Also running a server from linux would be much easier. But if you want, I will help.
