N.S.A can spy on your PCs.. While they are offline, completely covertly.

Here's an excerpt from The New York Times article.

"While most of the software is inserted by gaining access to computer networks, the N.S.A. has increasingly made use of a secret technology that enables it to enter and alter data in computers even if they are not connected to the Internet, according to N.S.A. documents, computer experts and American officials.

The technology, which the agency has used since at least 2008, relies on a covert channel of radio waves that can be transmitted from tiny circuit boards and USB cards inserted surreptitiously into the computers. In some cases, they are sent to a briefcase-size relay station that intelligence agencies can set up miles away from the target."

 

"There is no evidence that the N.S.A. has implanted its software or used its radio frequency technology inside the United States."

Yea, I'm sure just because you have no "evidence" it hasn't happened. I'm telling you they secretly try to control us more and more by the day.

 

Don't really see a debate here, but yeah I do find that incredibly disturbing. Problem is I don't think that we can expect the NSA to go anywhere, even if legislation is passed to stop NSA spying it'll just go underground and continue, this time with better security from the inside.

 

The better question is if I unplug the power source could they still transmit the data back to NSA headquarters?

 

There is no such thing as privacy anymore so I could care less about this.

Bit of an invasion of privacy though don't you think? I mean the stuff on your hard drive is in YOUR house. It is different to Facebook, Twitter and so on.

 

Exactly I choose to post these things to show others pictures and info about me. It's different if I have pictures I want to keep private stored on my computer for me to see and some guy with a badge decides to creep on me.

Well its essentially the same as the police coming in your house and going on your computer and looking through your files. Only now (if this is true) they don't need to even go in your house never mind get a warrant if they want to look at your computer. Sure only people with stuff like cp or files related to terrorism would be concerned about this but its a whole different level of invading privacy by looking at your computer without even coming in the house or even you knowing...

 

Anyone who is surprised by this is a rube. Anyone who is made nervous by this is either a terrorist or once again a rube.

If you aren't doing anything illegal it shouldn't be a problem. There are too many people being looked at for you to be a target anyways. If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to worry about. It's totally different than someone coming in your home to ransack your files on a computer.

 

Actually, it's been upsetting people much before the Snowden scandel.. It's just now come to the public's attention. And phone taps are a completely different matter.. If I had to choose an Orwellian world in which I had every single one of my phone calls was recorded versus all the data I have on my computer being monitored not knowing when or where, I'd easily choose to never have to use a phone again, let them record all they want.

 

How is this any different? If the NSA access your data from remote locations without you knowing, isn't that worse? At least you'd be able to get some sort of investigation going for the stolen data if you know it happened. Not the case otherwise.

 

I'm not sure why everyone seems to think this would be a bad thing all together. I get that people who aren't doing anything illegal don't want to be spied on, but on the other hand how does one know who's doing something they shouldn't be behind closed doors, and who's not without checking for patterns while they think they can't be watched or effected.

Most people don't realize the technology they are using is the same radio frequency technology they have used in the past to disrupt enemy weapons and targeting systems by transmitting malware through a tunnel.

Nothing you send over the internet is safe, even if your using some type of encryption software, there is always a way for someone to decode and read anything that you send or receive. Your information is sent through tunnels that basically connect you from a start point to an end point and other points in between, so the information may get from (the sender) to (the receiver). Anyone with knowledge of how to exploit this would be able to "sniff your packets" (spy on you) and read anything you send or receive by basically getting in between the start point and the end point and intercepting the information.

Say for example a communist country were to threaten other world powers with nuclear weapons in a sad attempt to get something in return. One could "sniff the packets" (spy on them) in the locations they know the enemy has valuable information or certain hardware and exploit the "secrets" leaving them feeling vulnerable, and unsure how they gained access to the information.

 

That's why quantum-entanglement encryption is the next evolution of communication technology. 2 identical protons vibrating at the exact frequency create the key needed to decipher the transmitted message from point A to B, and if there is even the slightest interference with conventional methods, it would not succeed as the vibrations of the entangled protons would not match, thus rendering the key useless.

But if the NSA further develops their radio frequency technology, then the benefits of the quantum encryption would be moot.. As they would be able to receive the messages once it's deciphered at destination B...

In other words... Installing a USB or PCI wireless card in a computer that connects to a laptop ("briefcase"). The wireless card transmits on a frequency other than the usual 2.4GHz.

Not really that impressive. Anyone could prevent this by checking if there's anything that's connected or changed in their computer. It's not like they're tapping into offline computers without getting their hands on them first.

"nearly 100,000 computers around the world" is a very small amount considering there's 350 million Americans, and more computers than Americans.

 

Who cares? I accept this like something good.
If you are not doing something illegal,why must be so worried?
