My two cents on the state of Sythe.org

You're relatively new to Sythe, that explains it.

 

That wasn't meant as an insult or anything by the way Leanbean. I'm just saying, Sythe used to be a lot better, but what you're used to is what it has fallen down to.

And n4n0 I'm on mobile so not gonna go back and find your post to quote it, but where you said not to blame you, I'm not. The point of my post was to say it's ridiculous that Matthew limits shit like that, because any capable programmer could easily do it without leaving security risks.

 

1) Themes don't matter in the long run as long as they are not bad and Sythe's is not (and flat solid colors do look like butt).

2) New forum software does not really matter either. People aren't going to stay because we have vB4.

3) We don't control what games people play but we can try to get more players from those games or encourage people to play those games.

4) Advertising isn't going to help since we are literally just a message board and offer no services and have much smaller budgets than larger service providers.

The pool is always small. It's always been small. The staff now are much more willing to promote people than before. It used to be that admins would decide who to promote 9/10 times and the globals would vote. It was much rarer that a global would take the initial step. That isn't the case at all anymore and if you throw in some groupthink and some sense of necessity and urgency and people get easily promoted.

I'm glad the scoring is getting updated but it's still just a metric and it still won't work. Metrics simply don't.

The staff is a disjoint group of people now. There is conflict and people don't seem to mesh together like they used to. We used to have fun and talk and hang out and shit. There used to always be something going on and people were active and posting and giving opinions. It just isn't as good as it used to be and part of that has to be the turnover rate and I just think that the overall quality of the team has simply gone down. Be more selective.

Can't just switch. Encourage activity and let it take it's course.

Sythe really gained most of it's activity during 2007 before the trade restrictions came out. Initially the bot got it off the ground but the market made it what it is now. Making it like PA would most certainly help a lot.

I'd do a community gaming night. I dunno what games you are thinking but I'd love to do some Cod4 or TF2 (since it's free) or something like that.

We need an active IRC server more than anything... That the staff will come on... Because people are people and want to suck some dick... And they will join if they could suck some dick... But they didn't and I gave up... So...

I think it would be nice if staff members were active though and did help the site grow instead of not helping the community at all and doing the absolute minimum to keep their mod rank.

These threads come up every other month or so, I mean hell I have made a couple of them. People will complain and bitch until they're tired or someone locks the thread, and then nothing changes. The site needs some invigoration, but the solution isn't bitching or making excuses it is being cohesive and inclusive. Everyone has ideas and some may really suck, but discussing them could whittle poor ideas down into some beneficial and executable to help the site out. I also think there happens to be problems with the staff myself, as SuF said they're just disjointed now. They used to seem like a cohesive front who enjoyed benefiting the site. I mean hell, look at the first page where Ziggly admits the job isn't as glamorous as she wanted it to be. If you wanted to join staff to live some sort of power fantasy or glamor trip I get why everything is so disjointed, and yes this is a criticism of motivation. I know a lot of people want to join the staff to get the market boost, but that is why the turnover rate is so high, or so I am guessing. People get bored or tired when they realized it is essentially a thankless job, and when they don't get the praise or income spike they want then they just say screw.

Anywho that is just my two cents or so.

Your response is exactly what I'm talking about with spam all over the forum, and no one will do anything about it. It's just what Sythe has become now. I could report your post, some moderator looking for mod score will close it saying "Done, thanks!", and you won't be infracted, and your post won't be deleted. The only time people seem to get infracted on this site is when they insult staff members.

 

Hmmm well there are only so many games that everyone has / can get. I remember I wanted to play the TF2 thing, granted I suck at like every game so never expect much out of me, but my connection was horrible back then... now it is slightly better! So that's my excuse bahahah. That and being busy =p.

Yeah I remember the movie nights... never watched one with the Sythe crew, though.

I'm responding to posts and having fun, I'm sorry if that upsets you. No one wants an uptight forum where people cannot have some fun and respond to other posts that are relevant. The games are a nice community event and I was showing my interest and giving my reasoning in case that information was relevant. The reply to your post was just for fun.

The same could be said for the post you -just- made.

 

Staff are expected to go beyond. If they just meet a quota, they really aren't fit for the job. If they're just filling their quota, and nothing more, they aren't fit. I see a few staff members, but when I see on the "Who's online" list.. Corey for example, I think, who's that? Maybe if it's a market mod, I understand, I don't use the market. But I've seen a post from Corey a few times throughout all of my time here on Sythe.

(Sorry to bash on you, Corey, but you were on, and a good example)

 

Inactive staff members aren't the reason Sythe is dying, the reason it's dying is because we have nothing to offer apart from a Runescape Blackmarket.

League of Legends already has plenty of platforms that are used forum-wise and there is really nothing else Sythe can use for a target audience apart from Runescape which is dying.

 

I think a good place to start would be going through the staff list and removing those who really do nothing except the minimum mod score. There are mods like -Ryan who work hard for the site that deserve mods and then there are mods that really don't do anything such as Malakadang.

 

If this site is solely based on Runescape and Runescape is dying.
What does that make this site? I'm all in favor for branching out to new sections, new games, etc.
Maybe a literature section or something.
As for the spam forum, I think a majority of the posters want to try and make it a misc forum. IF you are thinking misc and spam are the same, i'm sorry I think you are wrong.
The name "Spam Forum" gives it a sense of negativity to me.

 

It's not explicitly written and it's not enforced but it is obviously part of the staffs' jobs. Finn used to basically have a dictatorial rule over it but with him gone no one else stepped into his shoes and the staff as a whole is a fucking pain in the ass to get anything done. I'm glad you're trying. It should be a major part of their responsibilities.

 

In response to my resignation, I quit because I didn't want to end up like the staff you've mentioned that contribute nothing. I got into a full time job, met a nice young girl and i'm so damn busy in RL these days, being a burden on the staff team is not cool. If i'm not contributing, whats the point? I didn't do it for the rank, I did it because I enjoyed it (when I had free time) plus I feel I put alot into it. Sadly, real life takes priority over Sythe.

I'd suggest looking for a new game that is coming out in the future, and start really promoting it within the site. One example would be: http://elderscrollsonline.com/en/

Getting everyone involved as a community playing the beta, and then setting up a market even before the game is released seems to be the best bet at creating a new market which people find useful. You also want to look at games which will require a Black Market, since that's what Sythe is best geared towards.
