What is the reason you are part of a religion / an atheist?

So what is the reason you believe what you believe? Did you get raised that way or did you convert because of a (special?) reason.

I was raised a catholic, but we didn't spend time going to church or reading the bible. I did do a communion when I was young.

Later I started to think that the stuff wrote in the bible (I haven't read it, but I know the stories), especially the famous bible stories like Mozes, Noah's Ark, Adam and Eve, etc didn't sound realistic to be true. So I stopped believing in them.

So that left me with the belief in God, but not the Bible. I did pray once in a while, also praying for god to send me a sign that he is there. (ofcourse nothing happened) I also stopped believing in Heaven and Hell.

Later I really started questioning the belief of God. I started thinking that God created the Universe, but he let everything go it's path, just like a little rewindable toy car, but he still had to rewind it (intervene).

(At this point my belief is already falling apart, but I still thought that there had to be 'something'.)

Spending time on Sythe I came across a thread about god and I read some really interesting stuff (mostly from Shredder). It all made sence now and the pieces fell together. I came to the conclusion that God didn't exist and I am still believing this.

So, what's your story behind your belief?

Because religion is for some a touchy subject, which can result in a flamewar, there are a few rules:

No, this is just going to become a flame war in 2 seconds like the last one. Why would you create a debate center for religion when there already is one?

 

No, I don't want people discussing the existence of God or anything, lemme make some rules.

 

My parents never told me there was or wasn't a God. Then when I moved down south one of my teachers asked me what I thought about Jesus. I had no idea what to say and was almost converted to Christianity but then I read some books at the library and became an Atheist.

 

I'm sure that Shredder has converted dozens of Sythe.org users to Atheism. He didn't convert me per se, but after reading some of his posts back in the day, he made the ball start rolling. I questioned my faith, and researched it. Before I came to Sythe, it wasn't even remotely possible that I would doubt my Catholic upbringing. But with time, I came to the conclusion that there probably is not a God. I may change my mind at a later time, but as for now those are my thoughts.

 

I do alot of self thought. Not sure if i'm going to ever 100% be sure if he is real or not but i'm leaning towards not being real. Been brought up in church for years. Started not to care, then really thought about it.

 

I have actually started to go to church, once more. I only go for the youth groups though, as they seem to actually care about the kids haha.

I have a lunch meeting set up with the youth pastor, as i have always wanted to ask questions but everyone just ignored me. I am, and always will be, curious about everything.

There is no proof of any religion being completely valid. And fuck I'm not even atheist Anymore I don't even give a fuck enough to call myself agnostic

 

I was Christian until I was old enough to question my own beliefs, mainly because little kids believe anything you tell them. From a personal point of view, I think religion shouldn't be imposed upon the younger generation. Let them make their own mind up.

But yeah, after questioning my beliefs in late primary school I pretty much came to the conclusion that God PROBABLY doesn't exist. My parents aren't Christian, but I was sent to a Christian primary school and currently go to a Christian high-school. Ironic, I know.

There aren't many threads like this.
There is a thread about gods existence (http://sythe.org/showthread.php?t=390354) and this thread, which is about peoples' religion.

 

I was raised in a somewhat religious family. But as I grew older, I've been questioning my religion and beliefs. Now I am an agnostic believer.

 

Well, my thoughts about religion (as well as many others') originally derive from the way my parent's upbringing. Though, I have my own intuitions as well and I'm not some mindless retard who follows everything his parents say. After, speculation of life in general I most likely would fall under the category Agnostic.

 

Atheist, I dont need a god to solve my problems... There could be something but I wont belive in it anyway.

 

Other. I use logic in my decision making which clearly means that being religious and living how a fairy tale(the bible) tells me to would be a stupid choice for me.

 

My family isn't very religious. I was still brought up to be a Christian.

When I turned 14, I started asking a lot of questions, and wasn't getting any proof to back up the answers.

I discovered SFA later. I read all of Darren's debates, which helped finalize my decision.

I then watched Zeitgeist, and now am atheist.

 

Yeah, zeitgeist "helped" me too a little on becoming an atheist, just like godisimaginary.com

 

First to the OP, I'm sorry your a fallen away Catholic, I hope you come back. I converted to Catholicism at the age of 13, on my own free will, my parents also then converted.
